We were at high school together. She had long, blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale, clear skin. I used to get jealous of all the attention she got from boys. Even though people said we looked just like each other.
Now she’s vanished. Just like the fifteen girls before her. All with long, blonde hair.
I’m back in Mendex, Wyoming. Five years after the crash. It’s a town that never forgets. A town that hates me.
The missing woman is none of my business. So I keep my head down. I go to work.
I'm Kaelin Wennerberg, I was born and raised in a small town in Montana, US. Since a very young age, I have dreamed of being an author. I started my debut novel "The Jameson Cabin" when I was 22 and having a full-time job it took me four years to write and have my novel edited. What you're reading is the work of my dark thoughts and growing up in small town with nothing to do but drive aimlessly around. I am a huge fan of horror/suspense novels and films. My favorites include "The Shining" by Stephen King and "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis. Recently my favorite read was "The Troop" by Nick Cutter.
Loved this book! So many twists and turns. I was not expecting the ending that happened. Clark (Graham) came off sketchy to me from the moment he appeared and I just had the feeling he was the one after her. Such a great read!
Have you ever read a book that completely frustrates you, and then you find yourself yelling "Nooooooooo!" as you turn the last page? That was absolutely me with Woman Missing, and honestly, I'm still kicking myself because it's been a few weeks since I finished it and I cannot for the life of me remember the main character's name. Yet somehow I can recall every other character and plot twist with crystal clarity. (Let's call our protagonist "J" for the sake of this review – don't judge me!)
Wennerberg throws us straight into chaos from page one. J is desperately trying to win back her ex, Mikey, when a drunken night ends in absolute tragedy. She gets behind the wheel intoxicated and strikes a man, killing him. But here's where it gets chilling – with his dying breath, he warns her that "they" wouldn't be happy and would come after her. Those ominous words haunted me throughout the entire book.
Fast forward through J's prison sentence to her new life in recovery. She meets Graeme at an AA meeting, and what starts as a promising connection quickly spirals into a nightmare that made my skin crawl. Graeme isn't just some random guy – he's connected to the family of the man she killed, and this family has a very dark hobby: kidnapping and murder.
The real psychological punch comes when J finds herself caged alongside Eva, her high school nemesis. Kaelin Wennerberg masterfully weaves their bitter history into the present danger, creating this claustrophobic tension that had me reading with sweaty palms. These two women, who once battled for social supremacy as teenagers, now must decide whether to work together for survival or let old grudges seal their fate.
What frustrated me most (in the best way possible) was how Kaelin Wennerberg kept pulling the rug out from under me. Just when I thought I understood the dynamics between J and Eva, another layer of their twisted past would emerge. The author has this cruel talent for making you root for characters who make absolutely terrible decisions.
The ending absolutely destroyed me – hence the "Nooooooooo!" moment. Without spoiling anything, let's just say that sometimes revenge and destiny have their own plans, regardless of what we readers desperately want to happen.
Woman Missing is a dark, twisted psychological thriller that will stick with you long after you've finished it. Fair warning: you might find yourself equally frustrated and completely addicted.
Here is my review for Woman Missing by Kaelin Wennerberg
This story was a brilliant psychological thriller that had suspense and tension all the way through and it gripped me so much from the start of the book that I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough. I got so engrossed in this story, its characters and pithy plotline that I couldn’t put the book down as I needed to know what happened next as there was so much going on. The story was superbly written and drew me in from right from the start. It was described very descriptively and everything was described in detail. There was a serial killer at work and this is a sort of story I love to read. The author’s writing was very easy to follow and this story was so easy to get into, I just couldn’t put it down! The main character had a similar resemblance to the killer’s past victims and when she met her past boyfriend Mikey, by chance, he was concerned that she was walking home alone so gave her lift although she protested. He was surprised she didn’t know about the past killings although she had only been out of prison for six months. I haven’t read this author before but I would love to read more books by her in the future.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT . . . WILL BLOW YOUR MIND.
A JAW-DROPPING PSYCHOLOGICAL SUSPENSE WITH TWISTS THAT WILL MAKE YOU GASP.
This addictive thriller full of twists is perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Daniel Hurst, John Marrs, Sue Watson and Jane E. James.
OH My Gosh!!! This book is mind bending. I couldn’t believe what I had read, and so much of it I didn’t see coming AT ALL! Wennerberg has written a suspenseful, fast paced, knock you out, intense thriller and I was here for every word of it. It’s one of the best thrillers I’ve ever read. It didn’t try too hard at all.
The first twist got me, and then I wanted to kind of knock myself in the head that I didn’t see that one coming. But I kept reading, thinking I knew what was going to happen. Wennerberg set it up that way. But then things went a completely different way. There were many layers to this story which is why the outcome changed. The way that the layers were created and how they all came out were so skillfully written.
Throughout this whole book, I felt uneasy. I didn’t exactly know how it was going to end, but the way that it did end? I didn’t see it coming. I also don’t know how I feel about the ending. It let me wondering a little bit… I feel like it was a little open ended, and it has me asking questions. I would totally ask the author these questions, especially if there may be an extended epilogue coming, or a novella coming to see how it’s going to ultimately end, or are we going to be left wondering. I also had mixed feelings about Max’s feelings! Ultimately, I understood her, I think!
Either way it doesn’t matter how I felt about her feelings! This book was absolutely amazing. I will be shouting it from the rafters that thriller book readers and thriller book lovers need to read this book. It was SOO good! I couldn’t believe what I had just read, and I’m SO glad that I read this book. Now I can’t read to read more by this author! So please, do yourself a favor and check out this book! It’s a 5 star in my book!
What a read this was , fast and furious psychological suspense from start to finish with an ending you won't want to miss. Over 20 years 15 blonde girls have gone missing in Montana , the last 1 year ago. Her schoolmate and former friend Maxine, call me Max returns to town after serving a 5 year sentence for vehicular homicide while drunk at the wheel of her car. Not the first time shes driven drink and not the first body shes seen , the good time girl has quite a reputation and events from her past are about to catch up with her. Her ex who still has strong feeling for her is now married with 2 kids but insists on "looking out for her" in her hometown where shes universally disliked. Her father rents her a scruffy apartment but keeps his distance due to events in their past. She makes friends with a shy but handsome man she meets at AA meetings and eventually are romantically linked also. He too has a mysterious past , but it turns out that there is more to this relationship than Max could ever think about. The whole story begins to unfold when Max disappears at an AA meeting. What happens next is the stuff of nightmares when finally the past catches up with all of the characters. The question is who lives who dies ? The answer is to read this exciting book. No spoilers here.
Max Masterson is finally out of jail and is back in her small hometown of Mendex, WY. Everyone in town knows what she did and they are not ones to forget. She keeps her head down and tries to live her life going to work and attending AA. A girl she went to high school with, Eva Willems has been missing. The townspeople have been speculating that it may be the "Monroe Killers", since Eva has long blond hair, blue eyes, and resembles Marilyn Monroe. Just like the 15 other girls who went missing before her. Max and Eva have a sordid past but if the "Monroe Killers" are hunting again, Max could be next.
Just wow! This was seriously a wild one! Told in multiple POVs and multiple timelines, it had me hooked. There were parts that made me cringe a little, but I couldn't turn away. I did predict one of the twists, but that ending, I never saw it coming! Max was not a very likable character, but I did feel sorry for her. What her mother did really messed her up. There was, however, one thing she did that really made me angry. There were some steamy scenes and some tense ones. I absolutely loved the setting of a small town in Wyoming. This was a dark, twisted, crazy in the best possible way, psychological thriller that can be binged, and I would recommend it🩷
From the gripping opening line—“I killed a man. Maybe he deserved it.”—Kaelin Wennerberg plunges readers into a tense, psychological thriller that explores guilt, trauma, and the unnerving sense of being watched. Max, the protagonist, has just served five years in prison after a drunken night ended in the death of a man. Now back in her hometown, she’s determined to rebuild her life. But shadows from her past linger, and a creeping paranoia begins to take hold. Is someone watching her—or is her mind playing tricks?
Woman Missing is dark, suspenseful, and more twisted than it initially appears. Wennerberg masterfully layers tension through eerie twists, complex characters, and a chilling subplot involving the disappearance of blonde women. As Max struggles to survive and stay sane, the reader is pulled deeper into her fractured psyche, questioning what is real and what is delusion.
It’s an intense journey into the darker corners of the mind that leaves you thinking long after the final page—and wanting more. Hopefully, a sequel is on the way.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Woman Missing by Kaelin Wennerberg is a gripping, emotionally charged thriller that explores the lasting consequences of a single bad decision. At the center of the story is Max, a character whose internal struggle between redemption and relapse is both raw and deeply relatable. Wennerberg crafts Max’s journey with remarkable emotional depth, drawing readers into every moment of doubt, fear, and resolve.
What sets this novel apart is its eerie atmosphere and the constant sense of unease that builds with each chapter. The suspense is tightly woven, with enough twists and tension to keep readers guessing until the end. Fans of I Know What You Did Last Summer will find plenty to love here—from the dark secrets to the creeping dread that never quite lets up.
Wennerberg’s writing is detailed, immersive, and delivers just the right level of creepiness to keep you on edge. Woman Missing is not just a thriller—it’s a cautionary tale about how one wrong turn can unravel everything. A strong recommendation for fans of psychological suspense with a dark, emotional core.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
A solid well-written psychological thriller with interesting twists.
This one wasn't one of my favorites, as I found the protagonist a character I couldn't relate to - regardless of the bad choices she made in her life due to whatever reasons - I could neither empathize nor relate to her. Let's face it, we need SOMEONE to cheer for in these stories (a whip smart cop, a compelling protagonist - someone in dire danger who we are anxiously hoping is rescued... Personally I viewed the protagonist in this story to be a creepy person who ruined numerous lives (the least of which was her own,).
Although psychological thrillers / police procedural can involve gruesome crimes, the best of the best provide us with a sense of justice, renewal, and hope. I don't get that from a character who spent her entire life caring about no one other than herself and how she could twist circumstances to best suit her own selfish needs, there comes a point where a character is no longer redeemable.
A dark psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns and a shocking ending.
Flashback five years and Maxine - Max - has gone off the rails. Caught two timing the only man she can just and drinking herself into oblivion she has lost it. She storms out of a bar and drives off not for the first time drunk behind the wheel. The inevitable happens, and she hits and mortally injures a man. his dying words to her as she awaits an ambulance and her fate “They’re going to make you pay for this.” Five years later, Max is released from gaol and is determined to turn her life around. However, the nightmare is only just beginning. Max finds herself being stalked by a man seeking vengeance! The plot takes several twists and turns as the true horrors that she has got herself involved are revealed. The final twist is the shocker! It is a very clever plot and well written. A cliff hanger left me hoping for a sequel.
Woman Missing was a really interesting psychological thriller and I have to say I enjoyed it immensely. The writing was fantastic and I felt struck a good balance between showing and telling. I also found that the plot was well paced and I loved the twists and turns as you read. The characters were also well written. I will say I didn’t exactly gel or bond with any of them but in a way that’s a good thing. For me they were written extremely realistically, they felt very human and I think that was the main reason I couldn’t gel with them, which I know sounds silly but trust me, in my opinion it’s a good thing.
I did love how Wennerberg paced everything and the twists along the way. There was a lot of tension and this led to the dreaded one more chapter trap. If you enjoy a good and twisty thriller this is definitely one to pick up. I will certainly be looking into all work by Wennerberg going forward.
Wow a fantastic read. Max Masterson has just come out of prison and is on parole. She is trying to get her life back on track and be a good person. Although someone is watching and waiting for the perfect time to strike. I was so impressed with this book. The characters were so different and it was so gripping I literally couldn't put it down. The ending was particularly brilliant. A stroke of genius by the author. The characters were multi layered in this book and this gave it that little something extra. Normally in characters what we see is inherently good. I loved that the characters in this were the opposite. It was so different an idea and yet another reason why it was so good. It's very hard these days with the amount of books to come up with something original yet this author manages this perfectly. I can't wait to read further books from this author.
This book is my first by the Author and based on this one won't be the last
Max has served her time for killing a man and has now returned home - where else would she go Someone doesn't think she deserves her freedom and now she is being stalked
The book is full of tension , much darker than I expected , with twists and turns around every corner - a real page turner . However I did not find Max a likeable character in fact I wasn't sure at times if I cared how things would turn out for her but that being said it takes a good writer to produce a book where this fact became irrelevant - the book as a whole was a dark , twisted story with a psychological bent that drew me in , well worth reading
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
This is a really fast paced dark thriller with some really unexpected twists and turns. I will be brutally honest, I wasn't actually a big fan of the main character, Max, but that is a reflection of the great writing. It's very easy to create a likeable main character that we are all rooting for, but it takes real skill to make us emotionally invested in someone with so so so so many character flaws. I'd say the majority of the characters all had various shades of morally grey to them, which added to the complexity of the plot and twists along the way. Definitely check out the trigger warnings as there are some pretty heavy topics within this book, but if you like your dark thrillers, this is for you.
In this dark and mysterious thriller we meet Max who has just finished a jail sentence for a drink driving incident where a man died. Max appears desperate to change. At an AA meeting she meets Clark. Could he be the man she is looking for? The fast-paced narrative is packed with twists and turns, keeping you on edge as you wonder who is watching her and if revenge is at play. Throughout the book, Max makes some incredibly dubious decisions and many other past mistakes surface, making it difficult for the reader to bond with her as she seems to be on repeat mode. The premise of the book was good, but for me the lack of morally decent or likeable characters was frustrating.
Maxine, Masterson, usually known as Max, has just been released from prison, she killed a man while driving while drunk, and has returned to her home town Mendex, Wyoming. Some of the townsfolk aren't in a hurry to welcome her back, but that's okay she just wants to keep her head down and get on with her life, but it isn't that easy. At the AA meeting she attends she meets a man called Clark, but who is he really, and why his he so keen to get to know Max? This is not always an easy ready but I was hooked from page one. Not for the faint hearted perhaps.
That first sentence basically told me to stay up all night and read this—and I happily obeyed. Woman Missing by Kaelin Wennerberg is dark, paranoid, and the kind of small-town thriller that won’t let you breathe easy. Max is messy, raw, and heartbreakingly human, trying to rebuild her life while blonde women who look like her start disappearing. The suspense creeps in like someone standing just outside your window, and by the time the final twist smacked me in the face, I knew that sleep is overrated.
Completely hooked on this story from the start, I wasn’t sure where it was going or who to trust but I had to find out. I’m trying not to give anything away but oh my gosh so many twists and turns in this, and that ending left me wanting more. A fast paced thrilling dark read with some very shady characters, and such a great read i shall be adding this author to my list of books to look out for.
Woman Missing by Kaelin Wennerberg. I did find this slow to begin with. But after a few chapters, it did surprise me. I liked the cover and blurb of this book. I liked the writing style. I wasn't sure how I felt about the characters. I didn't hate them but I didn't have any favourites either. This book did surprise me a few times. I do hope there is more to come for the way it ended. Certainly didn't see that coming.

What a suspenseful read with lots of twists and turns! The psychological aspect was certainly intense! I know I was kept on the edge of my seat for parts of the story! “One wrong turn can change everything” Recommended for fans of thriller suspense with psychological and emotional content. #shortbookthyme @shortbookthyme
Even though I liked this book, I thought it started out rather slow. Once I got by the beginning, things picked up and happened before I was ready for them. I did not expect it to go like it did. Good job!!! I voluntarily reviewed this book.
True evil. There weren't many characters that didn't have some kind of evil streak running through them. I have to say I was all for the results until the very end. Did not want it to end up like that. Revenge only makes a momentary difference.
Aside from getting my heart rate from anxiety in a few parts, this story was absolutely ludicrous. American small-town weirdos trying to pull a Freida McFaden? I don’t usually like her either, but in comparison she’s a literary Goddess. I need to stop being fooled by the free kindle unlimited books
There are some great twists in this book. I don't believe you will see them coming. Good characters that are pretty believable. Definitely some triggers.
