This is the tale of the rise of Sakuni—the prince of Gandhara—who transformed from the innocent boy Saubalan into the very embodiment of guile and deceit. The seeds of his hatred were sown when the mighty Bhishma arrived with the threat that his sister Gandhari must be wed to the blind prince Dhritarashtra. What began as resentment in the young Sakuni soon grew into a blazing fire of vengeance for the ruin of his father and brothers.

Seemingly insignificant, Sakuni chose cunning as his weapon, wielding it with the precision of a gambler moving pieces on a dice board. With each calculated step, he led the Kuru dynasty toward its doom, fulfilling his revenge through ultimate destruction. The novel shines a light on themes of fate, dharma, honour, inner battles, and the bitter fruit of vengeance. It lays bare the ruin wrought by war and the futility of hatred.

വളരെ മികച്ച രീതിയിലുള്ള തുടക്കമായിരുന്നു. കുരുവംശത്തിന്റെ നാശത്തിനു ശേഷമുള്ള ശകുനിയെ അതിശയകരമായ രീതിയിൽ തന്നെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. ഓരോ അധ്യായത്തിന്റെ അവതരണവും തുടക്കത്തിൽ നല്ലതായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ പകുതിക്ക് ശേഷം പതിവ് മഹാഭാരത കഥ പറഞ്ഞു പോകുന്ന രീതിയിലേക്ക് മാറി.

ഇത് സുബലനിൽ നിന്നും ശകുനിയിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രയുടെ കഥയാണ്. തന്റെ പിതാവിനും തൊണ്ണൂറ്റിയൊൻപത് സഹോദരന്മാർക്കും വേണ്ടി പർവ്വതമാകുന്ന കുരു വംശത്തെ തുരന്ന എലിയുടെ കഥ. മഹാഭാരത യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ പതിനെട്ടാം ദിവസം സഹദേവന്റെ വാളിന് മുൻപിൽ പുഞ്ചിരിച്ഛ് നിൽക്കുന്ന ശകുനിയെ കാണിച്ചാണ് നോവൽ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. തന്റെ പുഞ്ചിരിയുടെ കാരണം സഹദേവനോട് വെളിവാക്കുന്ന രീതിയിൽ വായന മുൻപോട്ട് പോകുന്നു. കുറച്ചു ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ധൃതരാഷ്ട്രർ തനിക് വേണ്ടി യുദ്ധം വിവരിക്കുന്ന സഞ്ജയനോട് പറയുന്നതായും കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു വായനയാണ് 'ശകുനി : ഗാന്ധാരത്തിലെ രാജകുമാരൻ' . ഭീമൻ, കർണ്ണൻ , ദ്രൗപദി, ഭീഷ്മർ തുടങ്ങിയവരെ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച മഹാഭാരത കഥകൾ വായിച്ചതിനേക്കാൾ നല്ലതായി തോന്നി. എന്നാൽ പകുതിക്ക് ശേഷം തുടക്കത്തിൽ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ കാണിച്ച താല്പര്യം കണ്ടില്ല. എല്ലാം പെട്ടെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു തീർക്കുന്നത് പോലെ തോന്നി. കുറച്ചുകൂടെ വിശദമായി ഒരേ പോലെ തുടക്കം മുതൽ ഒടുക്കം വരെ എഴുതിയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ വളരെ നല്ലൊരു വായന തന്നെയാകുമായിരുന്നു.
