Some of these adventures are tiny--one page long. Some run a bit longer. All are told in Shulman's own voice, that of a man who's lived all over the world, come to the US as a newspaper columnist, and found that he needs to supplement his salary by lecturing. He lectures on Yiddish literature, in Yiddish, to an ever-dwindling and contentious audience of aging Jews and sometimes an audience of young Jews who are interested in Yiddish but whose knowledge of the language is very limited. Don't worry, the book is written in English, and there's a glossary in the back for the few Yiddish words that he uses. Shulman makes a wonderful companion and guide to some of the strange nooks and crannies of his particular lecture circuit.
