At first, I thought, “This is just another book about how to read the Bible.” And yes, it is—but it is so much more. Gilbert Lennox doesn’t just give techniques; he guides readers into truly listening to God’s voice through Scripture.
One of the aspects I loved most was his reminder that the Bible is not a self-help book. It’s not about ticking boxes, following rules, or trying to “fix” ourselves. Rather, it’s about encountering God, understanding His message, and learning to discern His voice. Lennox manages to bring Scripture alive in a way that feels authentic, whether you are familiar with a passage or seeing it for the first time. You can sense that he practices what he teaches, which makes his guidance feel both practical and trustworthy.
I especially appreciated his explorations of 1 Peter and the Gospel of John, and his reflections on the differences between the Gospels. Rather than reading them as identical stories, Lennox shows how each Gospel offers a unique perspective on Jesus’ life and ministry, and how understanding these differences enriches our reading. He also encourages reading entire books of the Bible at a time, or over the course of a week if they are longer, to see the broader context and deeper patterns that might otherwise be missed.
His guidance is full of practical tools—like thoughtful questions to ask of the text, careful observation of context, and approaches for comparing perspectives—without ever feeling dry or academic. The book is deeply engaging, making it easy to connect with Scripture in a meaningful way while still challenging you to think and reflect.
This is a book that will enrich your understanding of the Bible, strengthen your faith, and help you engage with God’s Word in a thoughtful way. It combines practical guidance, spiritual insight, and a love for Scripture that is infectious.
I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to grow in their knowledge of the Bible and in their relationship with God. 5 stars! I got my copy through SPCK Publishing, and I am so thankful that I did.
