Lost on his trail in 1970s Salt Lake City, Utah, Elijah Greene finds himself torn between two worlds. Down to his last few dollars and a half-loaded revolver, Greene encounters the grizzled loner Kentucky, a man haunted by his past. Agreeing to carry Greene further on his journey, their simple ride derails and descends into a world of violence, dusty highways, and a deeper search for meaning. As they elude the outlaws on their trail, Greene and Kentucky encounter characters who force them to confront their own past, and in turn, their future.
A gripping road novel with shades of Neo-Western, Southern Gothic, and Noir influences.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Cameron Bogan is a writer, event planner, musician, and ordained minister – most often in that order. Meeting Kentucky is his debut at-length work.
Inspired by Southern Gothic and Western writers, he is most interested in subjects concerning the American South.
As I met Greene and Kentucky, three burning three questions quickly formed in my mind:
1. What is Greene writing? Cowboy poetry mostly, we’re told…but what is he thinking as the road carries him away? He has an artistic and naive bend, but it’s largely hidden from us…What does he have to say about this world of violence that hijacks his journey west - in his own words?
2. Why is Kentucky on the run? Is he a bad guy? Is he a good guy? What price must he pay to lay the past, whatever it is, to rest at last?
3. Why is there a horse on the cover? It is a very nice horse…but why?
If you want to know the answers my friend, you must meet Kentucky for yourself, and be warned - Bogan’s Cormac McCarthy-esque novella is much more than meets the eye.
The only question that remains as this entropic journey finds its end is: where will the road take Greene next?
This is a lovely debut from Cameron Bogan. His writing style is as easy to read as it is interesting. You'll come to love the characters, especially our protagonist, Greene, who kicks wide open a hornet's nest when he crosses paths with a man named Kentucky.
It's a great little story, paced out just right. I'm excited to see what's next from the mind of Cameron Bogan.
Cameron Bogan made me feel like I was in the middle of every scene while reading his debut at-length work. Meeting Kentucky will take you on a journey and make you explore your own philosophy as you follow Elijah Greene as he explores his. Proud to say I know the man that authored such an incredible piece of literature. Hoping for a novel next! Bien hecho!
This is a story of good vs. evil, present vs. past, and choosing your path in life. The author paints a great picture of the characters and scenes with his colorful metaphors, twang and wit. This is a great read!
