This short story is only four pages long and that is what the real problem with it is, rather than the writing. I liked the concept of the story with a man becoming instantly obsessed with a woman when he sees her for the first time and getting annoyed when she fails to have the same reaction to him. His harrassment of her spills over from meeting her to attacking her in the car park when she leaves and killing her so he can take her home to abuse.
As a story, it is the kind of thing I would read. If this had been a 100 page story expanded to have him stalking her for a few days before attacking her, I think it would have been quite successful. As it is in 4 pages he meets, harrasses, assaults, kills, rapes and indulges in necrophilia with her body. There can be no development in such a short story and obviously that must have been the intent of the author. I just feel that the story is actually wasted in such a restrictive format.
I would not have read this without unlimited, as it's far too short to spend money on outside of a collection or something. But since I didn't have to worry about that I was glad to explore some of Tim Miller's microfiction. It was short and sweet and there was an odd dreamlike quality that helped soften the blows of what was occurring. I can't say it was altogether unhappy. Not bad at all.
Even a psychopath gets lonely. The difference is this dude resorts to strangulation and necrophilia to find his happy every after. It's never an easy journey for the fairer sex in an extreme horror. Four pages of awesomeness from Tim Miller.
No rose for Emily? This is a deeply disturbing short story. I wish it was longer , but nothing lasts forever. This story is definitely one to think about when leaving the bar alone at night.
