Hades Basil was the "ho" of the family, just wildin' out and bedding all the women he could. No one took him seriously when it came to women, until.....

J Elle was living her best life, leaving her past as well as her toxic ass parents behind. It made you wonder what happened in her childhood. Befriending the Basil sisters at the hospital where she worked, had been a Godsend for her. One evening on a rare night out she encounters Hades Basil. He is handsome no doubt, but she could see the fboy all over him. 😂 Hades is immediately smitten with J Elle in a way he had never been before, shocking his siblings and strangers alike. After being shot down, Hades made it his mission to get this woman; not really understanding why. It took no time for the coupling to happen, and it was nice to see Hades on the straight and narrow. They were really cute.

Then them plot twists made my damn head spin, cause what???? 👀 I knew J Elle's parents were trash, but they were beyond disgusting with the actions toward their daughter. 🤬 Then Hades' revelation. 🤯💔 This read was then turned on its head! 😤🥹 Really enjoying the Basil family.

I thought they’d be crashing out more because both MC’s were a little spicy, BUT they ended up being a surprisingly tame couple (until provoked) that loved each other quickly & deeply. It’s kind of rude though that I was reading happily, cursing at the FMC’s parents, having some chuckles, and then boom 75% in, here’s a healthy dose of trauma🥺but I love the way that Hades & Jin’jer loved and supported each other through it. One of my favorite quotes was “relatives are given, family is chosen”. And I loved that Jin’jer was able to get the found family she deserved.

Mel Dau’s To Hades and Back is an emotional rollercoaster that drags you through fire, forces you to sit in the smoke, and then dares you to believe in healing on the other side. From the very first chapter, this story sinks its claws in and refuses to let go.
I’ll admit, before the truth was revealed, I struggled to understand her distance. It felt cold. It felt unnecessary. But when Mel Dau peeled back the layers and exposed the ugly reality of her upbringing, everything clicked into place.
Jin’jer’s parents’ actions toward her were downright disgusting. There’s no sugarcoating it. The betrayal, the emotional damage, the selfishness—it was enough to make anyone retreat into themselves. Her silence wasn’t cruelty. It was survival. And that revelation reframed everything.
One of the most beautiful aspects of this novel is how Hades’s family loved Jin’jer down. The Basil clan didn’t judge her. They didn’t weaponize her past. They embraced her fully—scars and all. That acceptance felt powerful and restorative. It showed that sometimes the family you marry into can help heal wounds the one you were born into created.
The chemistry between Hades and Jin’jer is electric, but it’s the emotional evolution that makes this story unforgettable. What happens when the right woman meets a man at the right time? Hades didn’t just fall in love, he transformed. The man who once left no room for permanence suddenly finds himself fighting for it. In loving her, he learns how to love himself.
The plot twists? Absolutely jaw-dropping. Just when you think you have it figured out, Mel Dau flips the script. Secrets explode like dynamite, threatening to slam doors shut forever. And the tension leaves you breathless. I genuinely could not put this book down. Every chapter felt like standing at the edge of a cliff.
Mel Dau delivered passion, pain, plot twists, and profound healing all in one unforgettable ride. If you love emotionally layered romances with flawed but redeemable characters, explosive secrets, and a family dynamic that wraps around you like a warm embrace, this one is for you.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A gripping, heart-wrenching, beautifully redemptive love story that proves sometimes you have to go through hell to find your heaven.

Great story!
Definitely really enjoyed it.
A lot happened in this story.
Definitely had me in my feelings
Entitled people be doing the most. I couldn’t stand J-Elle parents. They are the worse.

I’m glad that Hades quickly changed his ways after seeing J-Elle. He went after her and that instant connection was everything!

This Basil family don’t play.

Can we get a story on the sisters pleaseeeeee!

This is a spinoff to Mel Dau’s other story called Zeus; which is about Hades’ older brother, so read that first to get a better understanding of the Basil family. I really love the research the author did surrounding Greek heritage, ethnicity and language because the characters are biracial Greek and African American so I think its cool when the dialogue in the story includes both languages. There are also some historical facts and gems about Greek customs.

Onto Hades… the younger brother. We meet him in Zeus but I liked how in this story we find out why Hades is the way he is and why he treats women the way he does. Hades is funny and keeps me laughing with his mean banter and idgaf personality. I will say the beginning kept my interest but the middle of the story fell flat to the point I almost dnf. However I pushed through and I am happy I did because the ending answered a lot of questions and a lot of action happens at the end. I am not a fan of the trope surrounding the fmc Jinjer and I think that’s why I almost lost interest in the middle of the story but I am glad I pushed through. This is overall a decent story. I absolutely loved that Hades found his special someone and Jinjer and Hades were perfect for eachother. They both endured trauma and they both deserved to find true love. I love when a mean, tough, emotionally unavailable philandering man finds that special woman that changes him and makes him fall deeply in love. THAT is my favorite trope!

This was a very difficult book for me to rate because my feelings about it are complicated. I ultimately landed on three stars not because it was bad, but because my experience with it was layered.

First, I went into this completely blind. I didn’t read the synopsis or look into the premise. I just knew it was a Black romance, and that’s the lane I’m in right now, so I picked it up without hesitation.

What I didn’t realize at first was that I was subconsciously comparing this book to another Black romance universe that I absolutely love. The similarities in storyline and character dynamics were strong enough that my brain kept drawing parallels. I didn’t even notice I was doing it until one of the male lead’s actions gave me the ick…because it was something the character from the other series would never have done. That’s when it clicked: I was reading this almost like it was a spinoff of something else.

That comparison made it hard for this book to stand fully on its own in my mind. Every time something felt different from what I expected (based on that other universe) it left a strange taste in my mouth. That’s not necessarily fair to this book, but it absolutely impacted my reading experience.

One thing I really appreciated, though, was the fact that the characters are both Black and Greek. That’s not something I’ve personally encountered much in romance, and I was excited about that cultural blend. However, I expected a deeper cultural immersion than what we got.

They talk about being Greek. They speak Greek. They clearly value and love their culture. But it felt surface-level. When they go out to eat at Greek restaurants, there’s no vivid description of the food. When they travel to Greece, there’s barely any sensory detail…no real exploration of place, atmosphere, landmarks, or traditions beyond the immediate family gathering. Everything felt glanced over.

The entire story, in some ways, felt one-dimensional. Even when the plot started building toward bigger moments, the payoff felt underwhelming like a firecracker that fizzles out. You hear the buildup, you expect the explosion, and then… it’s smaller than anticipated.

Now, I don’t want this to sound like a negative review, because it isn’t. I actually enjoyed the book. I laughed a lot. The humor landed. The spice was good. The characters themselves were likable and engaging.

I just wanted more depth. More layers. More distinction. More moments that made this world feel fully fleshed out and uniquely its own.

Three stars feels right. It was enjoyable, but it didn’t completely satisfy me in the way I hoped it would. And maybe part of that is on me for bringing comparisons into the reading experience…but that’s honestly how it felt.

Complicated, but still worth the read.

Mel Dau did NOT come to play.
She did her BIG one with this story because baby… how does a mind even create something like this?! 🤯🔥

Let’s get into it…

Jin’jer Elle is a dedicated neonatal nurse who pours her whole heart into her work. At just 14 years old, she gave birth and was told her baby didn’t survive. That loss shaped her entire life… or so she thought.

Jinga’elle, daughter of a high-profile judge with a reputation to protect, was also 14 when she delivered her son. After waking up, she was told her baby was deceased. But secrets run deep, and powerful people protect their image at all costs.

Hades?
Whew.

At 8 years old, he was exposed to things no child should ever experience. Now grown, he guards his heart like Fort Knox. Women are temporary. Feelings are nonexistent. He moves how he wants, hits without attachment… until he meets Jinga’elle — and she is NOT falling for his usual tactics. She challenges him. Pushes him. Makes him feel.

And when the truth starts unraveling and Jin’jer realizes her son has been used as a pawn? She doesn’t crumble. She stands firm and lets it be known — how this plays out is up to YOU.

The emotional layers.
The secrets.
The trauma.
The tension.

Mel Dau weaved grief, betrayal, power, and love into one explosive storyline.

And listen… when Hades delivered that absolutely reckless line about Dorian’s adoptive mother??? I LOST IT 😭💀 The audacity. The disrespect. The creativity. I was on the floor because WHAT kind of insult was that?! The delivery was diabolical.

When Hades said that Dorian adopted mother was dumb and he just know that her mama wasn’t fully dilated when she had her. Cone headed bitch left her brains in her mama coochie and it was delivered with the placenta. I was rolling on the floor laughing because what.

This book had:
✔️ Trauma
✔️ Secrets & coverups
✔️ Protective energy
✔️ Emotional depth
✔️ Dark, complicated love
✔️ Unhinged one-liners

10/10 recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars because whew… this one took me THROUGH it

To Hades & Back by Mel Dau was a beautifully emotional rollercoaster that had me locked in from page one. This story is raw, passionate, funny in the moments you need it, and heavy in the moments that matter. You can feel the love, the pain, and the growth nothing felt forced or shallow.

The chemistry between Hades and Jin’Jer? Top tier. Intense, healing, and genuine. Watching them navigate their pasts while choosing each other was everything. Their connection felt real messy, protective, and deeply rooted in understanding, not just attraction.

And let’s talk about the Basil family because BABY… they stole the show at times. The family dynamic added so much heart and humor to the story. Mama Verne especially? Iconic. The love, chaos, and ride-or-die energy made the book feel warm even during its darker moments.

This book doesn’t shy away from real issues trauma, family wounds, emotional baggage but it handles them with care and purpose. It’s one of those reads where you pause, sigh, and say “yeah… I felt that.”

Overall, this wasn’t just a romance it was a journey of falling, healing, loving, and choosing yourself and your person over and over again. Emotional, powerful, and absolutely worth the read. I’d recommend this to anyone who loves deep love stories with heart, soul, and a little fire. 🔥📖

Ask And Ye Shall Receive

In my review for Zeus I mentioned how I'd love to read more about that Basil crew... Ask and ye shall receive because Mel granted my (and probably several others) request and she did not disappoint. This book covered a lot of groundwork in a short time and if written by someone else - could have felt messy or disjointed, but Mel just has a way to weave a lot into her book tapestry and always touches on important topics too. Hades and Jin'jer (I can't believe she named her FMC that but I digress) had me sniggling from the first meet- and like JElle, I must love toxicity too because I was smiling way too hard at Hades "first encounter" threats. Now the TRASH AF parents she had were nothing to smile about. But the way the Basils are so dope, it was like double for JElle's trouble. What Hades encountered as a child broke my heart. It is definitely not talked about enough in society. But leave it to Mel to teach us all a very valuable lesson. I think this book was well written with very likeable and funny characters and it held my attention from beginning to end. I feel another Mel Dau family series coming on y'all and I am here for it!

Hades and Jin'Jer!!

Hades fell hard and fast for Jin'Jer. Jin'Jer was skeptical at first because of Hades' reputation, but she soon realized that she was falling for him as well once she knew he was determined to be with her. Hades and Jin'Jer suffered a lot of trauma in their lives. It was fate that put them together at the right time when they needed to lean on each other. I loved the fact that they stuck up for each other when needed. Jin'Jer's parents were awful, and I was ecstatic when their so-called reputation was tarnished to the point of no return. I was shocked to find out what Hades had endured. Kudos to Mama Verne for taking care of business. Great book that had humor, chemistry, drama and acceptance. I just love the Basil family, and I'm hoping we will also get books on Hestia and Hera.

To Hades & Back

Love the Basil Clan...

Hades is my guy. I'm glad Mel decided to give us his story. He was the ho of the family so seeing him settle down was a breath of fresh air.

These parents do the most. They get fifty cents above a dollar, and turn into complete assholes. How do you treat your only child like she's nothing. I'm happy that J-Elle took it upon herself to be successful. She knew her worth despite her parents telling her untruths.

Finding out her son was alive was beautiful. I'm glad that she had Hades to help her through the bs. Same with her helping Hades. And let me just say Mama Verne ain't no joke. Julianna fofa.

As always, great story Mel. I hope you complete the series with Hestia and Hera.

My favorite family is back!!

I absolutely loved To Hades & Back!! Mel brought back one of my favorite families and I was so excited because I wanted to see how mama Basil was going to friendly kidnap someone in this book like she did the last one!

Hades and Jin’Jer’s love story was simply amazing! He knew when he saw her that she was his person and she was along for the ride. They both had some drama and issues from their past they needed to work through but that stuff didn’t affect their love story, just showed us why they are the way that they are. And with the support of my favorite family, their relationship continued to grow.

I definitely recommend reading this book to everyone who loves motorcycle club romance books!

New Favorite

Mel tackled two MAJOR storylines seamlessly. There was a lot to take in, but it didn’t seem rushed. Jin and Hades were a perfect couple who supported each other unconditionally. If anything, a little more time could have been spent on them getting to know each other. But the story flowed along with all the challenges brought on by OTHERS. They didn’t break each others heart. They didn’t disappoint each other. There was no misunderstanding that could have been avoided. They were an unbreakable force. This is my new favorite from Mel. I love these folks. Can’t wait until the next one.

okay read. :)

The Greek god family is one unique bunch—it’s always a great time checking in with their dramatic lives! Hades’ story wasn’t exactly dripping with the usual “hellish” vibes I expected, but what stood out were the many women he entertained... until Jin’jer walked into his life. Now that shook things up.

Jin’jer’s family? A whole different brand of chaos. Her mother, especially—she would’ve caught some hands a long time ago if it were up to me!

This was a great read overall. I’ll admit I skipped a few chapters here and there—the spice level was only a 🌶️ for me—but it still held my attention. I finished it in less than a day!

Hades

First of all… I need to be adopted into the Basil family ASAP because Mama Laverne?? That woman had me crying because she don’t play and I love her for it!

Now let’s talk about Jin’Jer Elle… baby, who put them apostrophes in her name like that?! 😭 I was fighting for my life trying to pronounce it, but she grew on me and was PERFECT for Hades.

And Hades?! Sir. You got jokes, muscles, AND audacity?? I love you bad. I would’ve been calling him “Daddy Underworld” by chapter 3, no lie.

This book? 100 outta 100. No notes. Just vibes. But I do need the sisters to get their own book next because I know they got some drama ready to unfold!

I loved the heck out of Jin’jer Elle energy. My girl did not take any mess, not even from Hades. They went lower and baby, she went to hell every time.

Let's get to the speech at the wedding, I laughed and cheered. Her exit was chef's kiss and left not only the attendees but Hades at a lost for words. Her parents were trash anyways. The lies they told and things they hid for image purpose was diabolical.

Now Hades, sir, that secret broke me down worse than your family. Momma for the win because she did as she should have. Zeus, my first man, broke my heart but he owned his mess up.

This book will have you everywhere but the pieces you lose along the way will be returned.

Money Can Be The Root Of All Evil

Mel Dau first let me say I love Hades before and much more now. Jin'Jer was such a great addition. I'm so glad they were able to be each others peace. You always give us topics the need to be addressed. This one was so unbelievable but believed at the same time. Jin'Jer and Hades had some deep rooted issues that neither knew how much they would have to depend on the other. I love the Basil family. I would like to see this family grow. Great read!!🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

To Hades & Back

Jin’jer & Hades! This was a dynamic duo. The connection between them was unbreakable. The way they stood on business behind each other during the drama of their pasts was beyond commendable! The Copeland & Debra were “donkeys” & that girl cause I’m not calling her the goddess got what she deserved! S/O to Mama Verne for being that MOTHER! This whole story had the spirit of the lioness & the support of the Basils made it so much stronger! Dorian thrived like his mom & it shows! I love this family! So does this mean Hera is next???

To Hades and back

This was a good one and I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one setting. Hades kept me laughing because he has no filter. I loved Jin’Jer Elle and her energy. She matched whatever energy she was given when necessary and wasn’t afraid to nut up when necessary. What her parents took her through could have broken her and made her angry and bitter, but she was happy and thriving. Her parents were beyond trash and their fall from grace was hilarious. I liked this couple together and I’m hoping to get more from this family.

Find me an Olympus god

This was an awesome read Hades and Jinjer had each experienced something traumatic as children Hades allowed it to show in how he viewed women and Jinjer creating a successful life without her parents this book touched on a touchy subject but it was a truth that needs to be addressed about protecting our boys also and poor Jinjer her parents worried more about image than the welfare of their child…as always the banter between characters will definitely have you laughing

Awesome Read

Hades was definitely a free spirit until he met Jin'jer. She was the woman that got his attention and kept it. Their relationship bloomed fast. The chemistry that the two shared was undeniable. Life brought trials from their pasts back to disrupt their peace, but they worked through them. The Basils were there every step of the way of their happiness to help continue to build. This was an awesome read!

I loved Hades and
Jin ger's story. They stood 10 toes down for each other. They both had past situations that came to surface and needed addressing.

Jin ger's mom and dadd were deplorable. It wasn't okay, but it was because Hades patents accepted her unconditionally.

The other one person that you did not cross was Mama Basil. She went hard for her family.

Even though I didn't read the previous books on brothers in this series, this book was an easy read.

This was good...

I did like the story. Hades and Jin'jer were cute together. The fact that Jin'jer made hades work for the 😺. I didn't expect t for the unexpected twist of exactly why Jin'jer parents were the way they were and the extent they would go was wild. Hades revelation made me want to murder that old hoe...so props to mama basil for ending her nasty flaw ass... all in all was a good story.

To Hades and Back!

Mel Dau’s books are an automatic read for me! It’s always going to be a good time. I loved this book. It was pretty much instant love and found family trope. Oh how I loved the Greek family, language, etc. throughout the book which was unique. There were twists and turns in this book. But I’m not going to do any spoilers… Read the book, it’s great! Now I’m all scootched in…

Hades x Jin'jer Elle

Whew, these two went through hell. Jin'jer was cursed with the worst, lying a$$ parents ever, and Hades was working through something no one knew about. One thing for sure is when he met Jin'jer, he knew he met his forever. I love the Basil family. These people stand ten toes down at all times. I'm glad that Mel Dau spun the block on the Basil family and I would not be mad if the girls got stories too.Happy Reading Y'all!💋

Scooch in for this honey

Yes honey, this was a great read. Hades played no game neither did Jin’jer, don’t let me start on Mama Verne. I love how the whole family loved on not just Jin’jer for what she with through with her own parents, but how the they love on Dorien too. The way the came together for Hades shows just how much this family is one unit Grandpa too. I just love the Basil family.

The continuance I didn’t know i needed!!! I feel in love with Zeus and his family from the motorcycle club series. I should have known Mel Dua was going to come back with more. Hades was hilarious and I was not expecting the plot twist with him or Jin’jer. I was happy for Jin’jer and how she made her life her own. These two only added to each other and i loved that for them.

I— dnf’d. 🥲 It takes so much for me to do that as well. And this takes nothing away from the author because I love her work, when I know I need a good laugh her characters will do it every time! I just think I didn’t connect with Hades & Jinjer.

Read it for yourself, you may enjoy it. I loved Zeus!
