Wayward Women is a unique, searingly honest, devastatingly raw two-person memoir about the friendship, travels and sex lives of two fiftysomething women finding their way again after divorce.
It's an entertaining, emotional and geographical journey that bounces around the world from Florida to India, Lapland to Hong Kong, as the authors -both leading travel writers - relay their experiences as midlife women – love, loss, parenthood, divorce, menopause – along with the tales of the inspirational women they meet along the way, and the growth of their friendship.
Review for 'Wayward Women' by Rhonda Carrier and Tracey Davies
This is the first book that these brilliant women have written together although Rhonda has written other books with other authors. I am definitely hoping they will continue to write books together!!
I will start by saying that this isn't my usual chosen genre but I'm an eclectic reader and happy to read most books. I chose this book in particular as I was intrigued by the fascinating synopsis and I am so pleased that I did read it! I must say that if you are the same as me and don't normally read non fiction then don't let that put you off, expand your literature genres and pick up your copy of this great book today and I can promise that you will not regret it!
I absolutely loved reading this open, honest and fascinating memoir by these two women. The book is written with alternating chapters as each woman tells us about her life, travels and more and then ends with the both women "summarising" up what has changed for them from the start. Both of these women are travel writers and I absolutely loved going on their travels with them whether with family, friends or on their own. It truly is an open, honest account of what the ladies got up to on their travels. It is ram packed with fun, emotions, alcohol, partying, spiritualism, drugs, sex, clubbing, meditation, spiritualism, romance, friendship, community, escapism, humour, grief, female solidarity and so, so much more!! Every woman should grab a copy of this as well as men of course but women especially!! They really do go to show that age truly is just a number and you are never too old to start again!! They journey takes the reader around the world from India to London, Hong Kong to Florida and even Lapland where they get to see Santa themselves!! This book is very well written and completely absorbs you into Rhonda and Tracey's fascinating travel experiences with their fantastic descriptions ensuring you feel right next to them every step of the way. They have managed to weave her travel, work and family experiences and lives into a fascinating, intriguing, unique and unputdownable travel memoir that will keep you hooked. This is definitely one of those books that it really does not matter whether you read it while soaking up the sun in the garden or curled up on the sofa listening to the rain as their stunning and evocative descriptions completely transport you to each of the places that they travel at the time at the turn of the page. I was that absorbed in the book that when I did manage to look up it took me a few moments to work out where I actually was. When I was finished I was actually gutted that I had to "unpack my suitcases" and return to dreary and rainy Wales. They really do ensure that you get a photographic image of everything that they have seen and done during their travels, lockdown experiences, adventures, emotions and makes you fall in love with both Rhonda and Tracey!! I absolutely love the fact they go on these wonderful experiences and start different lives with different people and make the most of their years. It is a travel memoir filled with adventure, laughter, love, stress, Covid, culture, kindness and much more!! I thoroughly enjoyed discovering and exploring the lifestyle, surroundings, people and culture of the different areas they explored and I love how open and honest they both are about how they were feeling and what they were going through at the times. I really do hope that they both decide to write more books together but in the mean time I am definitely going to check out the books that I spotted on Amazon that Rhonda has written about other travel experiences with different people. Regardless of whether you are interested in travelling, female solidarity or memoirs or not I would still definitely recommend this book to anyone as it truly is a fantastic memoir!! I I also really liked the chapter titles which I found intriguing in themselves and enjoyed discovering the link between the chapter titles and the chapter itself!! It is one of those books where there is just no point telling yourself you are going to read 'Just one more chapter' as, if you are anything like me, it just will not happen and I ended up devouring it in one sitting of a few hours. This book truly is a delightful, honest, adventurous and open memoir which I just could not put down. I carried this book everywhere with me and ended up devouring it in one sitting and then wishing I hadn't read it so fast!! Rhonda and Tracey's fantastic writing skills really sucked me deep into their travels where I could see everything come to life in front of my eyes and they left me with the emotions that they were going through. It is a great read packed with adventures, experiences, friends and emotions. I would definitely recommend this book to absolutely anyone looking for a fascinating, unique, refreshing, intriguing and unputdownable non fiction escapism. Make sure to also check out their website which is absolutely fascinating and filled with podcasts and discussions which I am off to delve into now!!
Clear your schedules and get ready to take a journey with Rhonda and Tracey!!! You wont regret it and you wont be able to put it down!!
Congratulations Tracey and Rhonda on a fantastic, intriguing, humorous and fascinating read! I absolutely loved learning about your travels and would love to read more about your journeys!
Overall an absolutely brilliant, entertaining and fascinating travel memoir that will sweep you off around the world at the turn of a page!
I have to be honest I was drawn to the book by the sentence above the title; Sex, Friendship and the Midlife Reset. For those of us of a certain age who have hit, or navigated, the menopause this memoir gives an insight into how Rhonda and Tracey coped with all the obstacles life could through at them after the age of fifty. It may not be the way that you would cope, or coped with what they had to deal with , however, we are all different in how we deal with what "Little Nuggets" life throws at us and this is their raw, and honest, account of how they did it.
There are many aspects of the book you will find funny, some you may relate to and recognise and others you may think “Really”and , "Perhaps not" !!!
Rhonda and Tracey coped with their lives in ways that may enlighten you or even give you food for thought whilst also, possibly, thinking their way is not for me. Whichever one you are though it may get you looking at your life and reevaluating how you live it in order to get the most out of it in a way that suits you.
I’m not typically a non-fiction reader, but I was drawn to this book by the sub-title - Sex, Friendship and the Midlife Reset - and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read it. Rhonda and Tracey’s tales of travelling, friendship, relationships and divorce, were funny and relatable, making for an extremely interesting read.
The women alternate writing the chapters from their point of view, each one focusing on a particular trip that they’ve taken, as well as looking at different aspects of their lives - including being pregnant with twins and the breakdown of their relationship. I loved the descriptions of the places they were visiting, which brought the locations to life - from swimming with mermaids in Florida to meeting Father Christmas himself in Lapland - and it takes you on a journey round the world.
Both women show that no matter what you’ve been through in your life, you are strong enough to move forward and find the happiness you deserve. Wayward Women is a book that all women should pick up, no matter what stage of your life you’re at.
Travel writers Tracey Davies and Rhonda Carrier have brilliantly written about their fifty something lives with honesty, humour and heart. This book is so relatable to oscillating mums, divorcees and menopausal women alike battling everyday with the complexities and twists and turns of life Lady Universe throws our way. I loved all of the travel locations, I loved the yoga, I loved the roasted carrot!
Think Eat, Pray, Love meets Thelma and Louise - strong, independent, adventurous women, unashamedly seeking happiness. All of the chapters are wonderful but I particularly enjoyed A Sea Opera of Women, Riptides and Rescue Women and Road Trippin’. With song references, fun, freedom and friendship this is a must read for all peri, pre and post menopausal women. You will laugh, smile, cry and goodness me relate. I’m off to look into interrailing…
Wayward Women is an emotional, funny and deeply empowering read that stays with you long after the final page. Tracey and Rhonda take you on an honest journey through friendship, heartbreak, reinvention and adventure, capturing the messiness of midlife with warmth and fearless candour. One moment you’re laughing out loud at their sharp wit and self-deprecating humour, the next you’re quietly moved by the rawness of their reflections on love, loss and starting again. What makes this book so powerful is its generosity. It reassures, uplifts and reminds you that it’s never too late to rewrite your story. Bold, heartfelt and life-affirming, This book celebrates resilience, female friendship and the joy of choosing yourself.
Wayward Women is a great read both empowering and also an emotional read that I couldn’t put down. This book is a journey of midlife full of heartfelt moments both good and bad but what stands out is the friendship and adventure in this story. I laughed (lots) and the next moment I was choked up with emotion. I loved this book and it’s one that will stay with you long after you’ve finished the book.
