Every victory, even the smallest, comes at a price. The enemy may be gone, but far more dangerous foes are already stirring in the shadows, preparing to strike. At the same time, the tide of evil monsters pouring through the Breaches does not just continue — it surges, growing stronger by the day. And the cause, it seems, lies with those who, for reasons unknown, persist in using nithstangs: cursed artifacts of ancient origin that bring harm not only to ordinary citizens but to seasoned Magisters as well. The Imperial Guards and the Order of St. George are stretched thin, barely managing to hold the line.
So how is a high school student like Vladimir Volkov supposed to survive, let alone fight back?
He is, after all, an ancient sorcerer reborn. And a job is a job.
The MC is quite a know-it-all and getting more and more tiresome. His bedding all kinds of women and schmoozing up to the elite didn't impress me much. Compared to similar plots in this genre the story rather falls flat as it just couldn't hold my attention. The big fight was rather anticlimactic as well, unfortunately.
This book was painfully slow and tedious. Still liked the MC, but the storyline lost my interest about a third of the way through. Basically nothing happens. This book is a dud. I gave it an extra star because I liked the MC.
Gangster wars + time travelling to alternate dimensions + supernatural + black magic + interesting characters and mysteries = The Sorcerer series by Victor Pylaev. It has a blend of lots of elements mentioned above. More than the first book. Yet the pacing, mysteries both closed in this book and opened for the layer books in the series were too good. It focuses on hero, old and new friends and possible frenemies, interesting situation with the Guardian Angel Female Doctor- both magically and relationship wise. At the end of the book, the challenge for the next book is set up, along with the mysteries. It seemed he had a clue who was behind the cursed artifacts, or atleast a lead on it. And then theres the loss his group had at the end of the book, and how are they going to handle the complications arose from their actions?
Not my usual mage book, but boy did it deliver. New capabilities and fast moving plot. New ideas throughout. Book one is really good and book 2 is better.
The first two books were incredible. Who knew Russian writers were so creative. Lots of twist and turns and the werewolf surprise caught me unaware. Looking forward to the next book.
