I'm giving this book 4 stars but in being VERY generous. The idea is a good one, especially considering Jorek's revelation at the end of book 2. HOWEVER... the development is lacking in every way. Main characters are barely 2 dimensional, and supporting character development is non-existent. There is more than one plot hole that could easily be fixed, and entirely to frequent use of phrases like "many months later" in places that should be filled in. All said, I feel like this is more of an outline or a first draft of a story that was written in a hurry.
Also, can I just take a minute to say that the break between books 1 & 2 is at an extremely illogical place? This could definitely be 2 novellas, but the breaking point should be in a different spot. I won't say when because that would be spoiler-y, but if you read both you'll know.

description

This was a great idea for a novel but somewhat messily and poorly executed! Also, i listened to the two books on audio, but at no point was it distinguished where book 1 ended and book 2 began! They were just combined. If they were separated they would be very short, so i guess it was better this way... Anyways - the story was all over the place with no specific plot! All these supernatural creatures are attacking Kayla and her family and this is all that happens!! There is no actual development or point of the story... There is no character development either! Kayla's boyfriend at the beginning of the book seems lacking! He is a recovering alcoholic who lives in a bad end of town and has questionable mental capabilities... They are breaking up one minute , then making up and getting married the next?!? This is nooo romance, this was sooo bad... They face the dangers for the rest of the book together, but David really contributes nothing to the relationship or to the overall story!

I will read the next book just because i have it ready but i don't particularly recommend this series to others... It all reads like a really low budget fantasy movie!

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Kayla and David and the rest of the characters of this series. Christine Sutton did a fabulous job of reintroducing me to some of my old fairy tales. I'm looking forward to reading the next three books.
