Immanuel, God With Us is the culmination of artist Robert Doares's life work. Created over a period of thirty years, this magnificent series depicts in fifty dramatic illustrations and four paintings the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As such, Immanuel is a beautiful, reverent work that uniquely captures the reality and meaning of "God with us." Each scene is a detailed recreation of the events of Jesus' life as recorded in the Bible. To ensure accuracy, each scene was also painstakingly researched from the best available sources, including archaeological, historical and geographical records; Doares's own excursions to Israel; discussions with experts; and Greek dictionaries. The result is an authenticity and attention to detail unequaled in modern religious art. In this extraordinary fine-art book for all ages, each illustration―along with the accompanying text by Doares himself―provides an unprecedented glimpse into the life of Christ. A rare and beautiful book to be treasured as a work of art, Immanuel is equally to be treasured as a book that offers unforgettable insight into the meaning of "God with us" as revealed in Jesus Christ.
When I was a kid I visited an exhibition of these drawings/paintings. The pastor at the church where I grew up had a personal connection to the artist and the pastor's family was even included in one of the drawings (the people are on a small scale, so it's not like they are recognizable besides a man, his wife, and their daughter). This book is a joy to look through. The commentary from the artist is so-so. He retells the story of the event portrayed and adds a little theological commentary, with a few explanations on his artistic choices while pointing out details. I would have preferred more of his commentary on artistic choices, which I felt were really illuminating when included, more so than some of his theological commentary.
Robert Doares was an extraordinary man and incredibly talented artist. He exhibited his work from March 5-April 28, 2000, at the former Art 1 Gallery in Gastonia that was co-managed by my mother, Chris Tessnear, along with Carol Lowry and Jean Goebel. ‘Immanuel God With Us’ is the book form of Doares’s work of 30 years to tell the true story of the life of Christ and bring it alive for the people our time. Mr. Doares was a sweet and humble man. His work is powerful and unbelievably detailed. I consider ‘Immanuel’ to be a visual Bible version. Stunning in scope, in minute craft and amazing to behold.
I liked the black and white art better than the color paintings. The color in the paintings just didn't grab me. But what was really amazing about this series of art was the amount of detail and even more so, the panoramic nature of each picture. It made you feel, as you studied each scene, that you were really there, right in the middle of what was happening.
