I spent several years as an Anabaptist minister, a faith tradition that emphasized the relevance of foot washing. Thus, I was incredibly excited to see Jessica Claire Bond's "A King Washes Feet: How to Love and Forgive Your Friends and Enemies."

Now then, a true confession.

As a lifelong paraplegic with spina bifida, I've had a deeper appreciation for foot washing. Sure, some think it's for funny reasons. But, here's the truth. I'm a double amputee - below knee on one side, above knee on the other.

I don't have feet.

I love the idea that there's this act of service that can never be returned to me. There's this way, really beautiful way, of giving to another human being and I can give it without any expectation it will be returned.

"A King Washes Feet" gets me in touch with all the feels within its 40 readings designed for the Lenten season. Designed to help us understand Jesus's act of washing his disciples' feet, this is a beautifully crafted and written/illustrated Bible study that engaged me from its opening pages through to its very end.

The readings serve as a model for how to love and forgive our friends and enemies. The readings also serve as a sort of cautionary note in a culture that can be all too quick to cancel those with whom we disagree or those who've even harmed or betrayed us.

These readings are all centered around Scripture, as they should be. There's no pop culture quotes, no historical quotes, and no approach other than immersion in Scripture from beginning to end. While this approach may not resonate with all, I much appreciated Bond's simple and insightful devotion to grounding "A King Washes Feet" in Jesus.

I've always taken a certain joy in the fact that "foot washing" in the traditional sense can't be returned to me, though I have a feeling Bond would call me into account on this issue because this book is an invitation, maybe even a call, to sit on the foot washing stool and let Jesus heal us. It made me think that maybe there doesn't need to be a way that I can only give and not receive. She made me realize that maybe I need that experience to wash away the weariness of life, hurt, brokenness, and other wounds.

Bond explores, utilizing both the written word and her well-known and viral artwork, what it means to wash feet in contemporary times.

There's so much to love about "A King Washes Feet," a Bible study that reminded me of everything I love about foot washing and also gave me an appreciation for my Anabaptist days and this too often forgotten ritual of faith.

For those who regularly embrace foot washing and for those less familiar with the practice, this is a lovely, beautifully written Bible study that I definitely recommend.

This Bible study will challenge you in the best way possible, because it will challenge you to become more like Jesus.

“It’s not about who’s on the seat, it’s about Who’s washing the feet.”

🌷 Jessica Claire Bond, founder of Salt and Gold and creator of the viral Foot-washing Series, guides readers to explore Jesus' servant heart—the way He loved, forgave, and calls us to choose humility over judgment. To pick up the basin and towel rather than stones.

💦 Through stunning illustrations, Jessica vividly depicts the call to humble ourselves and serve others in their messes and pain, just as Jesus did. It is deeply rooted in scripture, primarily drawing from John 13, the famous foot-washing passage at the Last Supper.

🌷 Each chapter includes beautiful artwork, scripture, reflection questions, and space to encounter Jesus honestly. We begin by allowing Jesus to wash our feet, embracing His love and care, then move toward washing the feet of others—friends and enemies alike—through acts of love and forgiveness.

💦 Jessica is a compelling writer who addresses difficult topics with both unflinching honesty and grace. This is a book you won’t forget!

Content for consideration: As Jessica notes in her thoughtful trigger warning at the start of the book, the Bible study discusses sensitive subjects such as domestic abuse, adultery, sexual abuse, and suicide. Some of the illustrations feature partially nude characters (non sexual.)

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received a complimentary copy from the author as part of their launch team of early pre-orders. All thoughts contained herein are my own.

What a beautiful devotional! I, like many who will find this book, fell in love with Jessica's work when she went viral for her Footwashing series on Instagram. The whole idea? That Jesus would, and did, wash everyone's feet.

This devo has 40 short chapters, designed as the forward states for 40 days. But I read through it in a day. I left feeling...a lot. Loved. Convicted. Treasured. Charged. I am deeply involved in a local church, and I have already recommended it to others.

Sprinkled throughout the well-written accurate theology and reflections on Scripture is artwork that drives her points home.

If you're new to Christianity, this devotional makes Jesus and the idea of servant leadership accessible.

If you're seasoned in your spiritual journey, it will remind you to keep your heart soft instead of rigidly legalistic.

If you're hurting, it will remind you how loved you are.

If you're struggling with someone else, it will remind you that Jesus wants to wash their feet as he has (and will continue) to wash yours.

Quotes to tempt you:

"That empty stool in front of where Jesus is kneeling with the basin of water will reveal who you think you are, who you think He is, and what you think His blood is strong enough for."

"In wiping His feet with the perfume and our hair, we come out smelling just as sweet and powerfully as Jesus. Covered in the fragrance of worship. Worship of God affects us on a personal level."

I’ve been following Jessica’s work on social media for several years, and I preordered this book as soon as it became available. I was also fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy.

In this book, Jessica poses a question we all eventually have to wrestle with: Is God good? Page after page, she thoughtfully and convincingly points the reader back to a resounding yes.

This book is beautifully written and illustrated, and it’s filled with meaningful questions for reflection. It’s honest, thought-provoking, and frequently convicting, but always in a way that invites growth rather than shame.

Read this book. You won’t regret it, especially if you’re seeking reassurance, clarity, or a deeper understanding of God’s goodness.

If you need more convincing, here’s a sampling of some of my favorite quotes:

“But the true King, the One who spoke galaxies into being, didn’t come with a scepter in His hand. He came with a towel. And He didn’t sit on a throne, He knelt low.”

“Jesus washing feet was never about who was sitting on the seat. If it is, we’re placing more weight on someone’s sin than we are on the power of His blood.”

“Jesus has always been willing to interrupt His “good” plans to meet us where we’re at, in the way we need.”

“When we’re also able to separate someone’s behavior from their identity, no one will seem too scandalous to sit on the footwashing seat with Jesus.”

THIS BOOK -WOW!!

I thought I knew what I was getting into, I had no idea.

The pictures are beautiful, the personal stories shared are inspiring, and the content is life changing.

This is an illustrated Bible study, that can be read through quickly. I chose to read through rather slowly, trying to capture and retain all of the information. The book is sectioned out well, so you can read through it however you want.

There are also questions thrown in throughout, that make you pause and reflect. (I will be reading through it again so I can answer ALL of the questions.)

This is not an easy read, but following Jesus was never promised to be easy. There will be times you're reading that you don't think things apply to you or you don't agree with something that's written then BAM - like a gut punch, you realize that maybe what you're reading was written especially for YOU.

The beautiful illustrations help set the tone of the book and give you an honest picture of different people seated on the stool, getting their feet washed by Jesus. Quite a few of the pictures brought tears to my eyes.

I highly recommend this book!!

I had the privilege to read “A King Washes Feet” before the official release (although I am still so excited to receive my long-awaited physical pre-order!). “A King Washes Feet” is both beautiful and empowering. It’s an amazing book full of art (scrim the same series of prints I have personally purchased for the author for myself and as gifts over the years), honest and personal background stories of the inspiration behind the art, and incredible devotionals with each piece of art that depict the love of Jesus in so many forms. This book is for everyone including new believers, believers who need a fresh wind, those on the fence about becoming a believer, and even those who feel impossibly far from God. I’ve read my Bible cover to cover and I’ve read many devotionals, but this book gave me so many new perspectives and moments to challenge and strengthen my relationship with Jesus. The Healing Trauma and the Forgiving Your Patents chapters alone were worth the price of the book. “A King Washes Feet” is an absolute blessing of a read and a true testament to Jessica Claire Bond’s calling.

Where to even start with reviewing this book. I had some reservations at first but when I prayed about it and the Lord said, go ahead with it. I was so so glad I didn't put this book down. It was so lifechanging and heartfelt. I learned alot through these pages and it will be a book I come back to again in the future. The author steps on your toes with how we are to follow God and how to forgive and love others. Washing feet of those in our lives is an honor to be able to be apart of. It really opened my eyes to how Jesus was betrayed but still washed feet and loved and forgave.

10 stars for this bible study book.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and TLC book tours and was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

I am about halfway thru A King Washes Feet, and I have loved every chapter! Jess has such an intimate understanding of scripture, and presents profound ideas in such a simple way. The love of Jesus is so simple and yet we tend to complicate it. Jess draws the reader back to the fact that Jesus loves ALL people, no matter what.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know who Jesus is, those who desire a loving reminder of the depth of Jesus’ love and acceptance, and those who have been Jesus lovers for longer than they can remember.

I’ve been a fan of Jess’ work on Instagram since late 2023, and was so excited to see she was writing a book! I just finished the digital pre-release copy (looking forward to getting the physical copy I purchased!!) and I was convicted and challenged to see people the way Jesus sees them…and also comforted as I was reminded how much He loves me despite my mistakes. You won’t regret picking this one up.

A King Washes Feet is a beautiful book and devotional for anyone seeking to see people as Jesus does, or to know Jesus as the Servant King. As a Christian, Jess’s artwork and short, daily devotionals about how Jesus loves and serves everyone he meets, his disciples, his enemies, and even those still wrestling with faith, show the heart of the King in a way that many people overlook. The message of the book is powerful, and the artwork makes it visual and personal to any reader. I’d recommend this book to anyone, regardless of religion, who wants to learn how to love people better. And I would recommend this to every fellow Christian, to learn how to serve others like Jesus did. Thank you, Salt & Gold, for your beautiful words and artwork that are truly changing the world!

What’s great about this book is that it doesn’t complicate religion. So often there’s world pressure in religious practices to KNOW everything. This book focuses on the heart of Jesus. The characteristic of Jesus where all his actions were based off of… LOVE. Love first. Without love, we are nothing.Without feeling God’s love, we feel empty. Without Love, we can’t do anything. This book encourages the ability to love all PEOPLE without thinking of differences.
