A perfect package of a book. Lawrence mixes stories from his career in cricket and his rich life afterwards with some thoughtful reflections on health, racism in the UK, and male friendship and support networks.
Knowing that he sadly passed just after the book was completed, and knowing that he knows this could happen as he was writing it, gives the book an extremely poignant and moving edge.
As a Bristol born cricket fan I'm surprised (and a bit ashamed?) that Lawrence hadn't really come across my radar before. His England career was pretty short but his life story certainly merits telling and I'm glad he's belatedly getting the recognition he deserves.
