"Franciscan Solitude" explores the historical and theological roots of the eremitical dimension of the Franciscan tradition. It includes important contextual and critical studies of Francis's "Rules for Hermitages". This book makes a significant contribution to contemporary Franciscan studies by drawing together theory and practice in an area where, even if resources have been sorely lacking, there has been a growing interest and deepening desire to follow Christ after the example and teaching of Francis of Assisi.
“Franciscan Solitude” is a collection of studies of the eremitical dimension of the Franciscan movement. The various writings cover history, and in-depth, prayerful analysis of Francis’s “Rules for Hermitages.” The last section provides practical examples and reflections on incorporating the ‘rules’ into life, whether individuals, married couples, or faith communities. The history was fascinating, particularly the early Middle Ages. Recognizing the intent to be a serious scholarly study, there are significant portions that are more or less easy to follow depending on your familiarity with some of the inner workings of the order and/or the church.
