⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — The Missing Reflection by Courtney Hickling
“Mirrors are perpetually deceitful.
They lie & steal your true self.
They reveal only what your mind believes it sees.”
— Dee Remy
The Missing Reflection blends mystery with a touch of the supernatural, and it does it in such a fun, intriguing way.
Bria, a struggling journalist, takes on a case she never expected—mostly because her basic daily needs (food and a white chocolate mocha with an extra shot — seriously, how are we supposed to survive without those?) depend on it. After hearing the desperation in the voice of Jessica—whose brother Jonah, also a journalist, has suddenly gone missing—Bria can’t help but get pulled in. Even if she can barely afford to take the case for free, she wants to help her friend.
Hexwood, their hometown, is a place Bria’s grandmother desperately wanted her out of… and now Bria is right back in the middle of its strange happenings. Bria herself is lighthearted, funny, and quick with a Scooby-Doo reference, which makes following her even more enjoyable.
Jonah was known as a brilliant journalist, but only a few people knew the truth—that he was either on the verge of a breakthrough or a breakdown while trying to bring home a missing informant named Noah. Are the two disappearances related? Or is Hexwood just that weird?
Jessica originally went to the police, but the chief brushed the whole thing off as “unimportant.” So Bria ends up dealing with the only person assigned to the case: Detective Cassian Graves—aka “hot cop.” (Is it even a good mystery without one?) He’s as wishy-washy as the case itself, and half the time you’re not sure what he believes happened.
Before long, the mystery pulls Bria into something stranger than she ever expected—more creepy wardrobe portal, but with mirrors. The supernatural undertones give the story an eerie, playful twist that makes it stand out from a typical mystery.
I wouldn’t give this a full 5 stars, only because there were moments I felt a little confused or couldn’t remember the significance of certain characters. But overall, the writing is strong, the concept is unique, and the mystery kept me hooked all the way through.
And the ending? I definitely want to know more.
Solid 4 stars from me — and I’m already looking forward to the next book!
