Brr-ring! Up pops a fireman at the sound of the fire station alarm, and he rushes with his crew to put out a house fire in a nearby neighborhood. The family is safe, but one of their Dalmatian puppies is missing! It's up to the brave fireman to rescue the pup from the burning house—and in the process, he finds himself a new firehouse friend .
This is the pleasant but informative story of one firefighter's day. Woken by the bell that tells the firefighters that there is work to do, they all load up onto the truck and head out. Upon arrival, the firefighter finds that one lone puppy is still in the burning house. Using fire safety skills, the team is able to save the pup and tame the fire. This story is filled with rhyming, cute illustrations, puppies, and even some vital information for children to know.
This would be a great book to read during a fire safety lesson because it's informative AND fun, which will be extremely beneficial to children. A good idea for an activity after this would be to demonstrate some of the techniques the firefighter used when saving the dog in the house (get low to the ground, stay by the wall, etc.).
Goebel, J. (2015). The Firefighter. Penguin Random House LLC.
Written in rhyme, the story follows firefighters to the scene of a fire where the family owns Dalmatians. When the family safely escapes, one of the ten puppies is missing. One of the firefighters goes back into the house to search and rescues him. Not surprisingly, the puppy goes back to the fire station with the crew to start his career.
The firefighters use modern equipment, practice safe rescue techniques, and include a female. The Dalmatians are cute, appropriately spotted, and not too cartoon-y.
