A Lifetime Last Night

This book is out of print, and has been replaced by an updated version titled Reason to Live.

Every choice has a consequence, a notion Richard Dunham refuses to acknowledge even as his twenty-five-year marriage to college sweetheart Emily falls apart. Forced into a homeless shelter when Emily throws him out, Richard has an unexpected encounter with an eccentric old man who offers him a rare opportunity.

A fatal accident leaves Richard between two worlds, but he refuses to leave this one before making things right with Emily. Left with only one option, he embarks on a mission to reclaim the heart of the only woman he’s ever loved, while trapped in the body of a man she’s never met—the man involved in her husband’s death.

With time running out, Richard must navigate a minefield of obstacles that stand in the way of reclaiming everything he once held dear. A shocking discovery offers hope, but is it too late? Will Richard let his past determine his future, or will he discover that it is never too late to be what he might have been?

After years of working in the banking industry in The Finger Lakes Region of Central New York, David Homick left his suits behind for a more casual gig as a freelance Web Designer. He loves the creative aspect of his work, which was not something that was encouraged growing up. Perhaps it’s all that pent up creative energy that has motivated him to express himself now between the covers of a book.

Homick weaves a touch of metaphysical wisdom and inspiration into intriguing, suspenseful, contemporary love stories and mysteries. He believes that fiction should do more than entertain. Good fiction causes us to see ourselves and our world in a different light, creating an emotional resonance that remains with us long after the final page has been read.

Many readers will in some way identify with his characters, whose outer circumstances and inner demons stand in the way of the love and sense of belonging that they seek. Their journeys have many twists and turns, and at times seems hopeless, but through perseverance they learn the key to building meaningful relationships and creating the life they ultimately deserve. Of course, we should never rule out a clever twist of fate or subtle divine intervention along the way.

One of the underlying themes of his writing, as well as his life, was inspired by a favorite quote from George Eliot. "It's never too late to be what you might have been."

This novel is very well written and the story flows easily, and if I didn't know it was the author's first, I would not have suspected it. Despite the genre not being one I normally read, the writing and story kept me interested and I read it in a weekend. If you enjoy a nice story about love and forgiveness with a metaphysical twist, I highly recommend this book.

In David Homick's debut metaphysical romance novel, we meet Richard Dunham, a man who doesn't believe that his actions actually have consequences...until he is forced to face them. After gambling his and his wife's savings on a new and unreliable stock, his wife, Emily, throws him out with nothing to his name but the clothes on his back.
Richard meets a strange old man who offers him a very rare opportunity before a fatal accident leaves him stuck between this world and the next, but he refuses to leave this world before he can fix things with his love, Emily. But he's not himself, he's trapped in a body of a man his wife never met, the man who caused his own death!
Time is running out. Can he do what needs to be done before all is lost?

This book starts out strange and then gets even stranger as the reader goes with Richard on this crazy journey inside the body of another man, just so he can apologize to his wife and tell her he loves her. It is a deceptively simple plot for such a complex and emotional novel.
Mr. Homick's debut offeringto the literary world is nothing short of incredible and very well thought out. The characters are three-dimensional and need no changes. They have that "next door neighbor" feel readers get while reading Stephen King novels (before we get to the gratuitous violence and bloodshed). Emily is a great female love interest and Richard is someone to be hated and then admired as he a hero in his own story, doing the unthinkable just to make things right with his love.
I enjoyed reading this and I think that readers will be pleased with the end result. This merged the paranormal and reality so easily and smoothly, I was really amazed.

I can't wait to see what he writes next!

‘A Lifetime Last Night’ begins with a man waking up in hospital and finding that everyone thinks he is someone else. Then the story goes back a few months to the marital troubles of Richard and Emily. What follows for some time is a fairly ordinary tale until around half way through when Richard has an accident and wakes up in a different body. This is when it gets really interesting. We find that Richard has been given another chance to make things right with Emily, but he will have to do it in the body of the man who killed him in the accident.

The metaphysics here is the idea that we have challenges with various people and that we must live again and again with them until we meet the challenge. Richard and Emily have been just missing for lifetimes, but this time Richard gets some divine intervention in the form of an old man called Arthur. Living months as a different person trying to win her heart eventually provides a renewed sense of his place in the world and the importance of his relationship with his wife.

The characterisation is very strong and the interactions believable. The writing is simple but effective and flows well, making it a highly readable novel. The book is well structured and moves at a good pace. The author takes an interesting premise and brings the story to life in a way that is both enjoyable and thought-provoking.
