Breached by: John J. Hohn

What kind of story is John J. Hohn’s Breached?

It is a page turner with a complex murder mystery plot that will keep the reader guessing. Some readers might associate it as a psychological thriller. Still others would focus on the romance between the protagonist and his new friend, Diane. All of these descriptions are true, but none fairly define the gestalt of the author’s novel.

Wrapped inside the mystery is yet another kind of enigmatic story. . . the human emotional turmoil his protagonist, James Raker experiences as he pursues those who perpetrated the crime and his own lingering despair over the death of his wife.

Hohn writes with clear and concise prose, leading this willing reader deeper into the morass of a double helix mystery. You won’t need the cheap thrills of a car chase to have an adrenalin rush with this author driving the literary livery!

Joining the majors are some interesting secondary characters from Raker’s past. One in particular, Diane, will rivet your attention as the pages of her story unfold for your reading enjoyment. All of the author’s creations are complex and fully developed believable actors in Breached. The reader won’t find any rehashed prototypes borrowed from some other novel here.

The author has sprinkled wonderfully designed pieces of prose throughout the book. To share one such example, which will not lead to a spoiler, is this phrase. “A full moon peered over the peaks as it rose in the east and bathed the valley with a soft lemony light bright enough for the trees in the meadow to cast a shadow.” Passages like this are evidence of Hohn’s talent (and hard work!)

This reviewer enjoyed the read and, with a few minor editorial tweaks that should have been caught in a fine work as is Breached, would have given one additional star to the solid four for this well crafted novel.

When John Hohn wrote his mystery novel, BREACHED, he obviously had readers like me in mind.

Retired police detective, Jim Raker, and his friend Diane travel to Lake Hannah in Baden County, North Carolina, to visit Raker’s old high school friend, Art Nichols and his wife Cheryl. While visiting at Nichols’ cabin, Raker and Nichols hear gunshots near the base of the lake’s dam. The two friends drive down to investigate, and discover the body of Norm Dennison—the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head. At first, Raker tries to steer clear of the investigation. After all, Raker is now retired, and the shooting appears to be nothing more than an unfortunate accident. But thirty years as a homicide detective don’t disappear easily. Raker’s instincts tell him there’s more to the shooting than unfortunate happenstance and, before long, Raker is up to his neck in the investigation.

BREACHED is John Hohn’s second entry in a series following the exploits of Detective Jim Raker. BREACHED has all of the essential elements for a novel of this genre—riveting plot, well-developed characters, and snappy dialogue. Also, throw in a complex conspiracy. The story is as much about the characters as it is about the mystery. Also, gore, sex, violence, and profanity are kept to an acceptable minimum—something that I greatly appreciate. A highly recommended read.

Retired Detective James Raker finds himself involved in an investigation of murder that leads to fraud. When Art Nichols friend Norm Dennison is found dead of gunshot wound drives Art into the past. Art suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) since his return from Vietnam thirty years earlier. James and his lady friend Diane Welborn are couple in a relationship that isn't working for James. Lake Hannah Home Owners Association president is doing dirty dealing but no ones caught him in the act and he hopes to keep it that way. Whose responsible for Dennison's death? Why is the president dirty? Your answers await you in Breached.

This book takes two years after the first book. I really like James Raker! I found the characters to be interesting, unique, honest, down to earth, and real to life. I also found that the story was fast paced because it hit the ground running and didn't quit until the last page. I would definitely recommend this series and author to others.

James Racker has gone from police detective to private security after his last breaking case in the city. Hoping for a slower easier life especially after the loss of his wife all he wants is simplicity. When he reconnects with an old high school friend Art Nichols and they get together for a weekend of leisure it turns out to be anything but. A man from the state sent up to check the integrity of the dam get shot. While most want to believe it is an accident things just don’t add up. That’s not the only thing not adding up in this small mountain side town either. Drug runners seem to have a foothold in a company that Racker is now head of security for as well. While trying to put the pieces together on both of these crimes many things come to light. A great story filled with loads of action, deception, manipulation and anything you could ask for in a great mystery novel.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Beyond the synopsis of the book, there really isn't much else to say about it. The suspense wasn't really there for me as you kind of are told who's behind the problems early in the book. There was way too much dialogue and conversations between the characters. It just felt disjointed and kind of jumbled. It was hard to read at times because of all of the talking and internal dialogues. I didn't really get into the story or click with any of the characters. It was a so-so read that I think could have been better without all of the dialogue and more suspense. I give this 3 books.

As a psychologist and former law enforcement officer, I was very interested in reading this book. I think the story was written well. I found the suspense interesting and engaging, which made this book a fast read for me. I thought the characters were well written and the arcs were especially thorough. I found the details made the story more real. I really enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it to others if you want an intelligent and thoughtful read.
