The Betrayed

The Daegmon War is a three-- volume fantasy novel beginning with The Gifted , continuing with The Betrayed , and ending with The Mountain . The centuries-- old war against the Daegmon Lord has been dormant for generations and knowledge of the Gifts (powers of healing, of supernatural knowledge, and of strength over demonic foes) has faded into dim folklore.

When one of the Daegmons suddenly returns to wage war against the All-- Maker and his people, only one small band, led by a young Westwash woman named Elynna and an Andani hunter--guide, rises up against the terrible foe. But they are few, and only a handful of them number among the Gifted. When their own king and his armies turn against the them, all seems lost for the company. Only Thimeon’s faith in the All-- Maker and in the Holy Mountain sustains the faithfulfew.

Matthew Dickerson (PhD, Cornell University) is a professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, a writer, the former director of the New England Young Writers’ Conference at Bread Loaf and the current co-director of the Northern Pen Young Writers' Conference. His previous works include fantasy novels The Gifted and The Betrayed; works about fantasy including From Homer to Harry Potter along with Narnia and the Fields of Arbol: The Environmental Vision of C. S. Lewis, A Hobbit Journey, and Ents, Elves, and Eriador: The Environmental Vision of J. R .R. Tolkien; some medieval historic romance including The Rood and the Torc; and even philosophy of mind and computation The Mind and the Machine: What it Means to be Human and Why it Matters.

A solid sequel to "The Gifted", I would recommend this epic/high fantasy series to those who are truly fans of the genre. Sweeping prose, a large cast of characters, and a slower pace will appeal to fans of Tolkien and other similar authors, but may not be what casual readers are looking for.

Finally picked up book 2 as I knew book 3 was being released. What can I say, I didn't want to be left hanging again! Matthew Dickerson has done it again. I loved the dual story-lines as Elynna and the original troop headed one way with Thimeon headed another way. How would they ever find each other again?! But Thimeon's quest was the right one, more information was needed! Adding new characters and new adventures. Once again I could not put this book down and finished it so quickly I did not have book 3 in my hands when I was done. I had to know if they would succeed in finding each other and succeed in the battle(s). If I was a nail biter, I wouldn't have any nails left!

I loved it!!! I didn't think it was going to be as good as the Gifted, because I thought that the sequel wasn't going to be as good as the first book, but it was wonderful!!! I loved that Matthew Dickerson talked about spiritual warfare and faith, and I loved it that it's not predictable unlike other books and his books are unoriginal, even though his books were inspired by Tolkien and Lewis, they weren't too much like them. I did cry in this more than the first one

I LOVE this series!!! It all starts with 'The Gifted' and continues but doesn't finish here. I didn't think I would like it as much as 'The Gifted' but I do. This is my new favorite series, I finished 'The Betrayed' today and I've started 'The Gifted' over again it's that good! I will re-read this for sure and pass it down to my children and their children to come!!
