Picked this (old) book from the STRAND bookstore in downtown Manhattan in August of this year (2021) A visit to this iconic bookstore in itself, deserves a whole page of review. What can one say? How can one describe the beauty & joy of visiting an iconic bookstore? I am from small-town-Bhopal India & I got the same goosebumps when I visit the only-iconic-bookstore of Bhopal Lyall-Book-Depot. This book deserves credit & praise for this structure, brevity & publishing beauty. It's a 10X10 size coffee table kind of glossy page book, with color pictures in every single page. Being published in 1972, I got lucky to spot it & buy it for a paltry 15 dollars (15 dollars is just subway return ticket plus a coffee & a bagel in Manhattan sometimes) The author captured the Art of India & Southeast Asia beautifully with all the famous sculptors, paintings & monuments of those era. That it begins with the 4th century Buddhist Stupa built by the great Ashoka (again 50 km away from my home-town in India Bhopal) was another matter of joy. It goes on with exquisite pictures of the Ajanta paintings, modern-day Afghan Buddha, Srilanka's stupas & the art of Burma, Thailand, Vietnam & Indonesia inspired by the Indian art. It also answered some of my queries like: 1.Q Why there is no art during the Vedic Age (though literature & language Sanskrit was defined in that era)? 2.Q Why there is no Buddha art before Afghan-Buddha? I acquired more understanding of the art of this entire region. Only one grouse: Wish the author had included the Rock-Paintings of Bhimbetika also somewhere (that's again 25 km away from my home-town :D)
