First off, boo hiss at Harlequin for pawning off some other author on me just because I follow a series in dead tree form. Yes; I'm irritated. I also don't usually skip stories. It's one thing in a novella where the individual tales are 100 pages or so. It's another to sucker someone into buying another 300 page book.

Second off - how about a moratorium on creepy guys on covers. If my natural instinct is to cross myself and cross the street when I see the guy, he's not a candidate for romance hero.

:ahem

Book no. 1... Heroine has the crappy childhood, bad memories, phobias, etc., that one usually sees in heroes. She's in the marines because she got caught eating a bowl of cereal after a B&E (she was hungry). They gave her a choice - go to the slammer, or join the marines. They give that as an option? Egads! What is our armed forces made of? Ok, Navy and AF are probably ok since they're more discerning. She's stuck here on assignment with the captain using her sentence against her. The H is a friend of the captain. The captain is a werewolf. He thinks he bit the H, but the H can't shift. The h's job is to teach the H sign language as he can't shift back and has no way of communicating. Hmmm. Stuff happens. Vampires arrive, vampires die, the H gets experimented on, eventually gets changed back into human (about the time the vampires arrive - what a coinkydink), turns himself back, and then gets the captain to bite him for realz because the reason he was a dysfunctional werewolf was due to it being a blood transfusion by some disgraced CO rather than a proper bite.

Irritations - the h's panic about being around him when he's human. His going apeshit when temporary shifts due to experimental treatments don't work. His being downright nasty to her to push her away "for her own good".

Book 2. Love it (drily). Heroine is upset - with good reason - about being "stuck" with H. So she vacillates between concern and bitchiness. for about half the book. The H is having issues due to some non-Core workings. And Brevis...is avoiding the situation they created. I have a fantasy...of some off the grid shifter who has never gone through initiation and who just happens to be something nobody wants to mess with - like say a Sabertooth tiger. And maybe the "professional seducer" (gawd I hate that) gets eaten for trying. Because honestly, I got the feeling that, if they'd known she hadn't been initiated yet, they'd have thrown every non-mated male they could at her. And the fact that the H underwent initiation at age 15...

I'm having issues with the initiation process, can you tell? A previous H underwent an attempt at initiation at age 12. It didn't work because he hadn't hit puberty yet. Initiation, in case you missed it, is sex with another Sentinel to unleash his or her powers. Nothing like under age sex (or in the case of the tiger, sexual molestation) to make you feel all warm and cozy and needing a jug of brain bleach.

Gotta read the other Sentinels books! The author presents a well crafted story, leading up to a nice ending. Answering questions but also leaving you wanting to learn more about the Sentinels world. It is 7th in the series, but it reads well on it's own. I really liked the other books I've read by Doranna Durgin, (The Last Wizard, Seer's Blood and others) and wasn't disappointed.
I highly recommend this author!

John Loc Lam is a werewolf who is stuck in werewolf form. He can't change to human and he is unable to communicate with his fellow marines.
Sofia Touma is a screwup private. She was given the option of going to prison for breaking and entering or enlisting in the military. She is trained in American Sign Language. Her job teach Sergeant Lam sign language and act as translator between Lam and his fellow marines.
Lam has already run three men away from the job but Touma doesn't have the option of quitting or failing. If either happens she goes straight to prison. Lam finds this out and agrees to cooperate.
They fall hard for each other. The human and the werewolf. A possible cure has been found to turn Lam human. He takes the cure but Sophia has to learn to love the man. The cure doesn't last and Lam is werewolf again. Finally they realize why he can't change--he had never been bitten. If he is bitten then he would be able to control his changes.
