Invisible String

Rate this book
As a boxer, Max Cano knows the sting of a missed right hook and the redemption of a left jab if you know how to take a hit and keep moving. When Rainey Collins is thrust into his path, he recognizes the kind of blow you don’t see coming—the kind that knocks the air out of you, not with pain but possibilities. Lowering his guard proves difficult. In the ring, his guard is high; in life, it's even higher. Rainey is vibrant and beautiful, and their connection is unforgettable.

No one ever made her feel like Max did—seen, wanted, alive. So, when fate places them in side-by-side cabins one summer, everything they buried surges back to life.

Between the tranquility of late-night mountain drives and cozy reading sessions together, their love reignites. Rainey quickly falls back into her feelings; every glance, every touch, drags her deeper, despite Max’s clear stance against a relationship. She hopes he’ll feel the same way about her as time passes, before they part ways.

Each moment Max spends with Rainey, along with their late-night conversations, slowly breaks down his defenses. The history they hold together is something magical. Despite keeping his guard up and his past buried, he finds himself unable to resist her.

Just as their hearts begin to harmonize, everything shatters.

Will the secrets of the past unravel? When and if they do, will a solitary thread of gold stand resilient amidst the chaos, binding them together with unyielding strength?

* This book is meant for adults 18 and over.

I absolutely loved this book! From the very first page, I was pulled in and held captivated the entire way through. Morales’ writing style is beautiful and engaging — I ate this book up.

It is on the longer side and could have been trimmed down a bit, but honestly, that didn’t stop me from devouring every word.

The main characters completely stole my heart. Rainey is lovely inside and out — she radiates kindness and has such a beautiful soul. And Max… he broke my heart in the best way. The life he has endured, and the man he has become despite it all, is nothing short of remarkable. He’s a good man, and I absolutely adored him.

This story has its fair share of angst, with plenty of twists and turns that kept me hooked. The addition of family and friends brought depth and a wonderful dynamic to the book as well.

I didn’t realize this was part of a series, but I’ll definitely be picking up the next book. (Fingers crossed that Lana gets her own story!)

Thank you to the author for the ARC — this is my honest review.

What the actual F—this story grips you from the very beginning. It’s heartbreaking, tender, loving, and sad, but at the same time you watch these two people keep finding each other. Call it fate, call it an invisible string—it’s powerful and undeniable.

This book shines a light on real-life issues that too often get ignored, like foster care, the government, and the broken child care system. These are things that should be at the forefront, because children are our future. They deserve to be safe, happy, educated, fed, loved, and above all else, protected.

Sometimes it’s good to be invisible, and other times it’s not. You see how often she’s forced to deal with situations in life that aren’t her fault—sometimes even thrown into the crosshairs of other people’s stupid mistakes without even realizing it. That truth makes this story hit even harder.

The story is difficult, but it’s also beautiful. Everyone should read it, because it opens your eyes to how unfair life can be for some, and how deeply the system needs to change. I can’t wait to read the next book—she has to live, or I’ll be devastated.

This book is a journey, and I think everyone will find a piece of themselves in the characters—whether in Rainey, Max, or the side characters. It reminds you that you have to learn to love yourself before you can love others, and that sometimes, things really do happen for a reason.

I am a huge fan of J. Morales’s books and have thoroughly enjoyed every one I have read so far, and was so excited to receive an ARC for this title, and as before this, it so didn’t disappoint. I loved every second of it and was engrossed from the very first page.

Max Cano is a dark, broody, emotionally closed-off, pure alpha male who keeps an exceptionally tight wall around his heart, unwilling to let anyone near it, and his circle of friends is kept to an absolute minimum due to the fact of his childhood experiences.

Max is a product of the foster care system due to the death of his mother in a car accident and his father’s use of alcohol and violence as his self-medication of choice to help him cope with his grief, leaving Max to pay the ultimate price.

Moving from abusive home to abusive home, Max finally finds a true friendship when a young girl arrives at his latest home, and they form a strong bond and kinship due to both of them having lost their parents, but due to a tragic turn of events, they both have their worlds ripped apart again.

Thinking his life has changed for the better, Max finds himself being fostered by a wealthy family, and he is enrolled in an elite college where he meets Rainey, who is strong, bright, independent, and has a carefree nature. The chemistry between them is infectious, and they build friendships that quickly become first love, but once again, fate is cruel, and Max is sent away without the chance to say goodbye or explain.

Time moves on and they both go forward with their lives. Rainey continues to live a life of luxury, but Max is just technically existing from day to day while trying to continue his passion for boxing. But with a chance meeting, their world collides again during summer break, where a chance meeting leaves them embarking on a summer fling, both trying to convince themselves that they aren’t still deeply in love with each other. As the day goes on, Rainey realises she wants more from Max, but he doesn’t tell her that he is at rock bottom and he feels that he has absolutely nothing to offer her. Doing what he thinks is for the best, he walks out on her again, but not before asking, “If we ever meet again by chance, will you fall in love with me one more?” Rainey’s reply is that she will never fall in love with him again.

But things change when, four years later, Rainey moves to Las Vegas, which is Max’s hometown, and has built a successful bakery business. This is where fate again decides to play an important role, leading her to Max once again, who is now a successful businessman as well as a famous boxer who is on the verge of going pro.

This part of the story is full of twists, turns, deceit, and dark secrets that put both of them in danger, none of which I saw coming and kept me on the edge of my seat, as both Max and Rainey try to navigate and build something long-lasting out of so much mistrust and hurt.

This book is beautifully written with emotion, angst, and heartbreak. The characters are so engaging, and their feelings just pour off the pages and into your heart. If I could give this book more than five stars I would, as the message it sends is no matter what never give up.

The only downside is that this ends on a cliffhanger, and I have to say for the next conclusion, but thank you, J. Morales, for the privilege of reading this ARC.

Absolutely obsessed with this book! 😍

Max and Rainey’s connection is intense, magnetic, and unforgettable. No matter how many times life tears them apart, fate always pulls them back together—and every reunion is hotter, deeper, and more emotional than the last.

The spice level is high 🔥 and the chemistry between them practically leaps off the page. Their love is raw, passionate, and all-consuming—the kind you can’t stop thinking about long after you’ve finished reading.

If you’re looking for a romance full of fated connections, fiery passion, and heart-wrenching longing, this is a must-read. I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves an intense, addictive love story.

What to say about Invisible String?! That I have been dying for this book well mostly HIM since you posted about Invisible String coming ! And yesss… I sure have been dying for this man. Was he worth the wait? That’s the whole question?! Oh absolutely yes he sure was worth it.

My MAN Max has been through so much in his life that no person should go through. It takes a strong will person that can survive the hand he was dealt with a hand.

Rainey sweet, caring, kind but also sassy, stubborn. Her heart gravitates to the only person that holds it.

Did Invisible Strings get my emotions yes! Did I cry, get mad, laugh, awe, etc yes I sure did ! Absolutely love the story and the characters!

The twisted and turns that are in here that you didn’t see coming but things leading up to it makes everything click in to place like you finished the puzzle and then boom and another thing happens. So you better buckle up because you are in for a wild ride with Max and Rainey…

A rags to riches vibe story that really tugged at the heart. I'm a sucker for a broken MMC, and Max is all shades of that. What a hard past he's come from. And Rainey is beacon of light and a balm to this hurting man. But she's also kinda sassy and has a strength all her own.

There's twists and turns that will keep you engaged and I loved how we get time to develop our connection with them and learn about them. Pacing was a bit sluggish at times but their story covers a lot. Max is more apprehensive about giving into to their connection and its understandable considering the harsh pains of his past. Rainey has some reservations herself but the spark they share is undeniable.

They need each other's strength and love to heal. We get a cliffhanger that definitely begs for the next installment immediately! I'm all in for them!

Max Cano grew up in and out of foster homes after his mother died. When he got to high school he thought he landed with a good family, who might want to adopt him. He was going to a private high school, and met Rainey and her friend Lana on his first day. Not long after starting the new school he got home and all his things were packed and he was off to the next place. He was heart broken. Max winds up in Las Vegas, and some how starts boxing in a local gym. The one friend he has has a place in Lake Tahoe and tells Max to crash there for the summer.

Rainey Collins grew up in a richer area in the area. She and her best friend Lulu went to the same private schools growing up. She has never wanted or needed anything her parents could never provide for her. When Max left she heart broken. She thought she caused him to be taken away some how. They were just teenagers, and her new love interest was taken away, she didn't get a good-bye or anything from him. When she is in college she goes to her family's lake house at Lake Tahoe. When she sees the hotty next door, she can't believe that its Max! The guy she never forgot. Will he even remember her?

The summer they spent together was one of Rainey's happiest memories and one of her saddest memories at the same time. Four years later she has opened up a bakery / bookstore in Las Vegas. She isn't sure if Max is still in Las Vegas. She never went looking for him after he left her. When she gets the bill from the security company, Max CO she thinks she knows Max is the owner, but, she isn't quiet sure.

Four years later Max has changed quite a bit. He is now an underground boxer, a business owner, a home owner, and doing pretty well for himself. He doesn't have the love he left behind in Tahoe. But, he's recently found out that she owns the bakery that he has camera's in. Once he finds out that it is Rainey herself on camera he can't stop watching the feed of her. When they meet again in person, Rainey doesn't want anything to do with him. She doesn't want her heart to break again. She knows she wouldn't survive it again.

Max has gotten himself in a little bit of trouble with the underground fighting ring leader. He wants Max to keep fighting, keep earning him business. But, Max wants out. Max wants to go legit to professional fighting and to do that he needs to cut out the underground stuff. But, the ring leader boss is trying to make sure Max keeps on fighting for him, and he's threating Rainey and her business. Can Max protect Rainey? Will she let him back in her life to keep the underground fighting boss away?

This one is on the longer side.

I did receive a free ARC Copy of this book. I am freely leaving a honest book review.

I had no idea what I was stepping into! Invisible string is a story of love that is HARD fought! Souls may be destined for each other but that does not mean it will be easy. I became quite invested in this story and by the end was not ready to be left staring at the book in a “What?!” moment.

For me, the first half of the book was a bit rough, and the writing felt a bit sporadic. Picking up way too quickly where I feel there could have been a little more detail, while other areas seemed to drag on a bit too much. However, the story is intriguing enough that I kept going and I am so HAPPY I did. The rest of the story seemed to hit a stride with some big twists and turns that provided complexity and clarity, making this an enjoyable read.

Max and Rainey have a love story that spans time. In the beginning, Max struggles to accept the string pulling them together while Rainey is ready to go all in. Likewise, as Max is healing and Rainey is deep in her darkness she struggles with acceptance of this pull. We see them work through this (a few times) because the string that ties them cannot be broken, they just have to see it. The ending of this book is a page turner! Including an unexpected, for this reader, cliffhanger at the end. There were not too many loose ends to this book, hence the surprise, and it will be exciting to see where the next book takes us in their story.

I recommend this book to romance lovers, especially those who love “true love”. While not a top read for me I am very happy I continued and will excitedly pick up the next book! I am in it now and need to know what happens to these two fighters.

I have no idea how I came across this book, but it's really good. The only problem is that it ends on a cliffhanger, and right now, I can't find any information about the next book.

The story follows Max Cano, a gorgeous young boy who has been in and out of the foster system since his mother died, and a sweet, young girl named Rainey who befriends him. They become best friends, and then one day, he doesn't show up to school.

Fast forward to years later, and the two meet again ... they share a wonderful summer, and then Max leaves ... he believes he's doing the right thing by her because he's at a bad place in his life.

Another fast forward, they're adults, both living in Las Vegas with businesses of their own and run into each other unexpectedly. Max has never stopped loving Rainey, but despite her age, she's immature, naive and angry ... this is the only part of the book that gets annoying, because she acts like an irrational brat for awhile.

There are a lot of plot twists in this book ... they're both exceptionally sad and really good, however, with things that happen towards the end of this book, I reckon the next one will be an absolute heartbreaker.

Bit on the long side, but a good book I'd definitely recommend reading.

This is a new book author for me, and I am so loving her writing style! The story of Max and Rainey had me hooked from the first page, and compelled me to sit and read it all at once. Max has had a rough life and is so closed off, the dominant lone alpha, hurt and defiant. He has been through the system and it has created an armor around him. He meets Rainey in college, she is sunshine, strong, independent, bubbly, her opposite, but they strike a friendship that blooms into a relationship until Max has to leave. After time they meet again, and the chemistry is alive and thriving, true soulmates but at different places in life. They feel that their love cannot sustain them, and once again part ways. But life has them coming back together a few years later, and here is where the story gets better, as they come to realize that there could be a future but there are so many twists and turns that you will not want to miss a thing and read through the night (at least I did). The back story of boxing and social classes help to bring action, angst, suspense, hurt, and heart. A true, true great love story !!.

Invisible String Pulled Me In and Left Me Gasping

Okay besties, let me just say... I had no clue what I was walking into with "Invisible String". This book is messy, dark, and absolutely addictive. Rainy and Max? Whew. Their love isn’t hearts-and-flowers… it’s jagged edges, trauma scars, and the kind of connection that hurts because it’s destined. That invisible string between them? Unbreakable—even when they both try to shred it.

Not gonna lie, the beginning felt a little choppy, but once the story found its rhythm, it sunk its claws in and didn’t let go. Twists? Yep. Emotional whiplash? Double yep. And that ending? Let’s just say I was left sitting there like, “WHAAAA... EXCUSE ME?!” That ending... 👀

If you’re into hard-fought love stories where fate drags two broken souls together kicking and screaming, grab this. Max and Rainy aren’t letting go—and now neither am I. And as always, don't forget to read the TWs first 😉.

Invisible String is a raw, emotional story that will stay with me for a long time. Max is a boxer who’s endured more pain and betrayal than anyone should in a lifetime. From his childhood to adulthood, he’s faced hardship after hardship, and watching the world fail him over and over again is absolutely heartbreaking.

Then there’s Rainey. She’s the kind of character that restores your faith in people. Sweet, caring, and endlessly compassionate—she represents the love and kindness we should all aspire to give, especially to those who need it most.

Together, Max and Rainey’s chemistry is undeniable. It’s a rollercoaster of passion and pain—equal parts amazing, torturing, maddening, and heart-wrenching. Their story isn’t just about love; it’s about survival, hope, and the invisible ties that connect us to the people who are meant to change our lives.

I’ll absolutely be waiting on the edge of my seat for the next book in this series. J. Morales has delivered a story that’s both devastating and beautiful, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

This book clawed its way into my heart and did not let go for the first 200 pages. The book is set over 11 years (roughly), and my God does that sort of timeline build up some tension!

I adore Max and Rainey as innocent teens, as 20 somethings figuring themselves out and as adults. There's something about this second chance romance that just hits different. Fate brings them together multiple times.

Max's difficult past and inability to communicate makes him the most delicious grumpy to Rainey's sunshine and you fight for them with every page (yes I chose the pun on purpose).

And as for the spice... you will not be disappointed. Pack a fan to cool yourself down after.

Personally, I felt like the writing slowed down for the last quarter of the book which I was gutted about as I loved it up until that point. But stick with it!
The ending will take your breath away, and I want to read Book 2 now to find out what happens to Max and Rainey!

“Some connections can’t be broken… even when fate tests every thread.” ✨🧵💫

Invisible String by J. Morales was absolutely breathtaking. This story tugged at my heart in the best way possible—raw, emotional, and beautifully written. The characters felt so real, their love so intense, that I found myself completely wrapped up in their journey from start to finish.

The push and pull, the aching vulnerability, the moments of heartbreak and healing—it all blended together into a story that I’ll be thinking about long after turning the last page. Morales has a gift for weaving words that not only tell a story but also make you feel every single emotion along the way.

If you’re looking for a book that will leave your heart full, your soul aching, and your faith in love renewed, Invisible String is it. An unforgettable romance that proves some bonds are simply unbreakable. 💜📚

Check your trigger warning

I really wanted to love this book to a 5 ⭐️ but I feel like it was so drug out. & to leave it on a cliff hanger like that. Nothing makes me more mad than a cliff hanger lol.
The book was absolutely great & worse the read.

Max’s story is not one for the weak, the amount of things he went through and to turn out of he did is just simply amazing.
& to hold a secret like he did and how he turned his childhood into his motivation and strength. 10/10

Rainey - at first she did get in nervous with how she was acting but then to uncover her secrets.. twist you didn’t see coming.

I do wish this book covered all that needed to be done & the next week carried into the next character but it’s packed with a lot of details.

I’ve never picked up a book playlist before (it’s usually not my thing), but something about this one called to me. Listening to it before diving into the story set the perfect tone—and wow, what an emotional rollercoaster this book turned out to be.

The first 100 pages ease you into the characters’ world, then suddenly—bam—the spice hits. Just when you think you know where the romance is heading, the twists and turns keep you guessing right up to the end.

It’s a hefty one at 500+ pages, but with a possessive MMC, rags-to-riches vibes, and a love story that fights to be found, the author really keeps things entertaining and ties it all together beautifully.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC, all thoughts are my own.

I absolutely loved this book, I loved the depth of the characters, the heartache, the journey, the plot twists. Everything.

Max Cano broke my heart. His tortured soul broke me, all his suffering, everything he went through. I just want to give him a hug. But the only person who can heal him is Rainey Collins.

Rainey is the most sunshiny, warm hearted and caring character. She is full of love for Max, and only wants to be with him. Her dad is an idiot and that’s putting it very nicely.

I don’t want to say too much as it will literally give stuff away, but omg you need to read this. I can’t wait for the next bit!! IYKYK 🫣

Loved the characters and their story. Loved the walk through their time together since adolescence to early adulthood. The growth of MC’s are great! The plot twist at the end was great and had me screaming. There’s plenty of mild spice 🌶️🌶️- nothing taboo, all sweet fun spice.

As a hard Swifty there was a lot of lyrical recognition, some which seemed unnecessary but some references seemed perfectly timed.

Story dragged in the middle like some sorta of cat and mouse stuff and limited boxing aspect. The boxing is like a subplot point- I thought it would have a stronger hold on the characters/plot. I was not ready for the cliffhanger! 😫 Such mixed feelings over this book.

This story beautifully captures the idea of true love—the kind that endures through time, distance, and the chaos of life. Max and Rainey share that once-in-a-lifetime connection, but outside influences and circumstance pull them apart—not just once, but twice. Their journey is filled with twists and turns, heartbreak and healing, tenderness and sorrow.

I really wanted to give this five stars, but a few sections felt a bit long and slow. Still, it’s an emotional and touching story about love that never truly fades.

ARC read. I’m in love with the string theory and the “destined to be together” theme of the book. I have not come across this trope in another book and appreciate the unique story. Their story is romantic, spicy, adorable and heartbreaking. The story was a bit long and I wished, considering the length, more would have been covered-like a start of a story with side characters.

Max is sweet and devoted and Rainey is spirited and bold. I love their dynamic. I am looking forward to the next book to see where the journey takes them.

Wow that cliffhanger ending has me in tears 😭😭
I absolutely love Max. He is definitely in my top five of book boyfriends. His loyalty to Rainey is what very few ladies are lucky enough to get. And rest of us green with jealousy cause we want it too.
This book is definitely the perfect examples of two people being soulmates and forever finding their way back to each no matter how they seen each other last. I just absolutely love this book

omg I have no words right now. This book was truly AMAZING!! One of the best books I’ve read this year I’m just blown away. Max and Rainey are meant to be together even though the odds are against them. It was such a beautiful story. I went from laughing to crying to being angry back to crying. The spice was TO DIE FOR. I started this book twice and I just couldn't get into it but I wasn't in a good head space. I kept seeing all this great book clips and reviews so I dug in again and boy am I glad I did. Max and Rainey are amazing. The love they have for each other, I felt it while I read. The title couldn't be more perfect. Just when you think you get to the base of the story you learn something more. I need book two like yesterday.

What a twist how the J. Morales rolled these two characters backstories together. The secrets that unfolded, her father being the biggest not only hypocrite but reason for so much pain that leading up that cliffhanger. Rainey and Max indeed an invisible string over time inevitable. I look forward to the next book.

I would have rated this book higher but it was long and sometimes repetitive to me. I liked the overall story and the characters but the length of the book was what took me out of the story a bit. The last 30% of the book was what saved it for me, but it ended on a cliffhanger so if you don’t like cliffhangers I would wait for the next book in the series to see what happens.

While some view true love as the stuff of fairy tales and happily ever afters... Not always.. True love can be messy, dark, arduous, and passionate. If that captivates you, then take a seat and delve into Max's life.
