Max Brand, one of America's most popular and prolific novelists and author of such enduring works as Destry Rides Again and the Doctor Kildare stories, died on the Italian front in 1944.
An ex-wild youth comes out of the pen, ready to follow the law. His old town isn't willing to forgive. Consequences, of the type found in an average Audie Murphy western, ensue.
This one is an early work by Brand, and it doesn't have the narrative vigor, or anything in the way of surprising mysteries to keep the western cliches and plot absurdities from being annoying.
Not very good, I was in pain trying to finish after getting half way through. Had to finish but felt like it was never going to end page after page of same old same old. There is a 5 page story in there just takes almost 300 pages to tell it.
Max Brand is one of my two favorite western authors. He enjoys his characters and he particularly enjoys writing about animals and he writes very well. I am attracted by his writing as much as I am by his stories. The Bandit of the Black Hills has all the ingredients that I enjoy in Max Brand's books. It was a terrific read, and I could hardly put it down. Even if you are not a big western fan, I think you will enjoy it. If you are a western fan you are in for a treat.
