Publishing For Beginners: What First-Time Authors Need to Know

Rate this book
Are you publishing a book? The road to publishing, whether you are seeking an agent and publisher or whether you are self-publishing, can be a rocky road. This book, for new authors just entering the publishing landscape, will guide you through the different choices, with advice and tips on editing, preparing your manuscript, querying agents, self-publishing, marketing, financial matters, and more. Case studies featuring successful authors give real-life tips on how to find an agent, how to write a query letter (with examples), and how best to market your book. Authors open up about the hard numbers they needed to publish, and their return. Even authors who have published can find up-to-date information about the changes in publishing and social media. The book also provides links to further information, and I provide a list of other resources (books, websites, blogs) to help new authors.

A fantastic resource for the aspiring author, this book covers everything from writing query letters to social media. Venard recognizes there is more than one road to publication, but is careful to caution authors that no path is easy. While querying agents can be a stressful process, going it alone as a self-published author entails a careful consideration of the expense involved in putting out a quality product and the effort that must be devoted to marketing and self-promotion. Examples of successful query letters and author anecdotes from both self-published and traditionally published writers makes this an invaluable introduction to world of publishing. Each chapter also lists an extensive list of additional resources for the reader who wishes to delve further into any topic covered. Highly recommended.

Publishing for Beginners: What First-Time Authors Need to Know is the best resource for new authors who want to be published. It is packed with information on how to publish, steps to becoming a published writer, ways to market your book, and what you need to know about finances. Although it is not a “how to” book when it comes to writing, it IS a “how to” book when it comes to becoming a published author. Step-by-step, she outlines the essentials of publishing, and she also gives you additional websites and books to help you on your way. I’d strongly recommend her book to anyone who is starting down the publishing path.

I downloaded Publishing for Beginners for free a few weeks ago, but I would be happy to pay for this book. It's excellent! I wish I had read this before I published my first novel. It's an excellent compilation of all the information out there on the internet about the publishing process(traditional v. indie), editing, querying, and marketing. There are dozens of links for additional information and examples in every chapter. This book is very well-written and because of the links, I'll use it as a future reference for many reasons. Thank you Lourdes Venard.

Writing my debut novel, I was clueless (and still have a lot to learn!) about the writing, editing, and publishing process. This book clearly explained what to expect, steps to follow, financial expectations for authors, and so much more! An awesome resource I would recommend to all authors just starting off.
