This series kills me. I am a big fan of the videogame and am hooked on these manga! There is heavy usage of Jibanyan, which is fine for me. Bring on the kitties! I had a parent point out she'd caught some of the Anime and was concerned with the violence. Admittedly, there certainly was a lot in this volume. Everything was cartoony where the characters were fine afterwards, but there are lots of Paws of Fury, using Whisper as a shield (he's pretty stretchy and durable anyway), and just plain fighting. As all the creatures are "spirits", everything's a-okay after a battle, even if they are full of holes. The comedy lies within the reactions and the actual unpredictability of the characters. It's so rare for me to actually be caught off guard, especially from children's books that can really set a character in a role and leave them there. The Yo-kai are cute, funny, rude, selfish, and kind. They always learn that the power of friendship is worth having, even if it does take a little work. I recommend this series to everyone! You'll laugh out loud!
I think that this volume is the best in the series so far, but more specifically it is the funniest one so far. I don't know what it was about it, but the first two chapters made me laugh quite a bit. And by "laugh quite a bit" I mean that I grinned stupidly while reading and chuckled a bit because I'm one of those people who doesn't laugh externally when I read. That being said, it was nice to have some really funny moments, especially considering that all the books so far have followed the same formula and each book needs something special to it to make them stand out. But seeing as I've consistently rated all the volumes so far the same, it's safe to say that I think Konishi has done a good job keeping things on point. The only reason this book didn't get a higher rating is because there's nothing particularly jaw-dropping or extraordinary about the story. It's just a fun story, and that's completely fine! Clearly I'm still reading them and still enjoying them. Also check out this cute Jibanyan picture I found online!
He's got a cute little froggy raincoat! How sweet :)
Here's my 10 thoughts and comments from this volume:
1. I like Cupistol, not only because their name is an amazing pun, but also because Cupistol doesn't discriminate. In general this chapter was really funny- you had all the guys fawning over Nate, Whisper in drag, Jibanyan's fake abs, and of course there was the fact that Cupistol is a Yo-kai that has a GUN. What a Yo-kai, and what a chapter.
2. Continuing to talk about Cupistol's chapter, there was something so wonderful about seeing Whisper and Jibanyan go from beating each other up to being in love with each other a few seconds. In general I find their dynamic to be a great addition to the series. Whisper is always very anxious and can sometimes be more of a hindrance than a help, and Jibanyan is a chaotic character who will not hesitate to punch anyone. Every time Jibanyan uses Whisper as a weapon against another Yo-kai it adds a few months to my life span.
3. I like how Jibanyan and Blazion got into a fight out of literally nothing. As I mentioned before, Jibanyan doesn't need a reason to start punching someone, and I like how unforgiving he is. You wronged him? Paws of Fury. Accidentally stepped on his foot? Paws of Fury. Mispronounced his name? Paws of Fury.
4. When Jibanyan had his "he's got all of us" moment in chapter 27, I couldn't help but notice that one of the Yo-kai pictured in the little collage was not a Yo-kai that we had met at that point. That Yo-kai was Cuttah-nah, who we do meet later in the book. I'm assuming Konishi drew that picture after he already completed Cuttah-nah's chapter, but then if that happened they should have swapped the chapters. But I didn't really care because Noko was in the picture, and we all know he's my favorite Yo-kai.
5. Jibanyan really only has three things on his mind at all time: fighting cars, food, and Next Harmeowny, which I think is beautiful. The fact that his first thought when he saw Blowkade, who is a very threatening-looking Yo-kai, and immediately thought that he looked tasty just shows how fearless (or stupid) Jibanyan is. Except if I went up to another human and I said that they looked tasty I would get a restraining order put on me.
6. It's good to see a new villain added to the series because it really needs a proper antagonist to keep things interesting. The real question is whether or not Gargaros will be a recurring character or if he'll only come back once or twice more, sort of like with Sproink. Honestly I think Gargaros is much cooler than Sproink, feels more threatening, and is a more mysterious Yo-kai. The one thing is that I have not seen Gargaros on the back of any of the next three volumes, so I don't know if he's not being shown to keep it a surprise, if he will be back, just not for a few books, or if, which would be the worst case scenario, he just never shows up again.
7. I know I've already said this before in past Yo-kai Watch reviews, but I really mean it this time when I say that Cutta-nah is literally me. I would consider myself to be a lazy person, but not only am I lazy I EMBRACE the laziness. I have no shame about it, but clearly I'm still motivated enough to write these lame reviews here on Goodreads.
8. I will say that this book was INCREDIBLY gory, which I wasn't expecting from a book that is rated all ages, but that stuff makes me laugh so I'm not complaining. Cutta-nah made a massive gash in Jibanyan's head, Jibanyan also got a billion holes poked in him, and Nate's head got smashed into the shape of a bowl.
9. Robonyan is incredible, partly because he's a different form of Jibanyan and partly because, despite being a cyborg who is almost a full out robot, he still gets nauseas. I also like how unempathetic he is when it comes to his past self and how obsessed he is with making himself as strong as possible to beat up cars. Although Robonyan needs to chill about Next Harmeowny, because they are definitely better than beating up cars. So now Jibanyan has to fit extreme training into his day when he already has to go visit Shogunyan's grave as well.
10. One thing I have noticed in pretty much every single volume so far, and I have not brought it up so far, is how strange the translation feels. I don't know if Knoishi just writes weird dialogue and the translation is perfect, or if the translator wasn't the best, but it feels weird. Some of the dialogue just didn't felt strange and unnatural, and if you were to read it out loud it would not come of naturally. I've read other manga published by the same publishing company and I didn't feel like there were any translation issues. I wish it would have been better because sometimes I felt like that reading mindset you get when you get into your book got broken during some of the rougher patches.
I definitely liked this volume the most so far, and I also thought that the cover of this one is the cutest so far. I can't tell in Jibanyan is doing little peace signs, rockstar hands, or if he's making the number four. Whatever it is, it's cute. I'm definitely looking forward to the next volume because there are some cool looking new Yo-kai, such as that pelican guy who looks like the Yo-kai version of Apollo from Animal Crossing and there were some characters from the mini chapters at the end of the third volume that I was intrigued by that are in it. One thing I'm happy about that I haven't mentioned yet is that it looks like we are going to properly meet all of the Yo-kai from the mini chapters. I will say that I couldn't care less about Rollen, but there are some coming up I'm excited for.
In this volume, we are introduced to a couple Jibanyan copies. (As Whisper states - due to Tattletale's influence - they just reused Jibanyan's design, since he is so popular.)
Robonyan is a robotic version of Jibanyan than time-travels back to the past to meet (and, perhaps destroy?) the Jibanyan in the present (which is his "past"), since he is too weak to defeat cars (since he spends too much time fanboying/obsessing over YK's Fifth Harmony clone, Next Harmeony). However, he ends up coming to terms with the "past" Jibanyan, and friends Nate instead.
Dianyan is a diamond version of Jibanyan. His body is made of diamonds, and he's a "cat burglar", who steals everything he sees laying on/in the street - including Katie's mother's ring. Luckily, during the fight, he drops it, and Katie finds it, so it gets returned to its' rightful owner. Yet again, this Yo-Kai becomes friends with Nate as well.
This is a funny manga for kids, with fantastical elements. Nate is a regular kid, except that he has a yokai butler, and a watch that allows him to see other yokai. This watch also allows him to call on his friends when trouble-making yokai are giving him a hard time. The series has a lot of silly humor. It also has quite a bit of violence, though it is treated with humor. Even emotional moments are treated with humor. The series doesn't take itself too seriously, so you shouldn't either. It's just meant to be a fun, silly read and I think it accomplishes that.
Not walking away from that 5-star rating. Also, Gargaros's artwork is just creepy. Anyway, i still love this book. Also, How did they freaking tie up cupistol!?? Oh well, but it looks plain silly when they tie up Jibanyan in those chains.
