I found Rhythms by Sagar Waingankar to be an enjoyable, interesting collection of poems to read. Rhythms is a good title for a collection of poems, I think. Firstly, I found the poems in the book interesting because they are written by a poet from India, so his use of the English language is strange to my English ears, and secondly, because he is a scientist, his special course of study being in chemistry, and it seems unusual to me that a person with such interests should write in verse. It is rare for a scientist to write verse or prose fiction, which is why the poems of Sagar Waingankar are unlike many others I have read. Like a true scientist, all through his verses, he is constantly searching for the truth of things, questioning his experiences and relationships, himself, at work and in pleasure, at the same time, he reveals himself to be very spiritually alive, awake. It seems to me that he uses the writing of verse as a tool for his questing spirit to journey within himself and to explore the outer world. In his poems, he is often critical of himself and others, but is always more positive than negative, which is good, refreshing.
I particularly liked the first two lines of a poem called Eloquent Denial, which read to me like an Oriental poem, complete in itself:
"Sense of pleasure flowed in me,
As I helped a fish drowning in sea."
All good poems should have lines worthy to be quoted, I think, and there are quite a few other lines I could quote that I particularly liked. The poems have good titles, too, such as Radiance of Water, Remarkable Workshop and Shine Guiding Nowhere. Good titles are important, I think.
Rhythms is a collection of poems written by a clever, complex, questioning, searching young man that could be enjoyed by readers of poetry of any age. I am sixty two, so the poems reminded me of what it is like to be young, in your late teens and early twenties, stimulated by what is going on around you, while deciding what is truly worthy of attention, and what must be avoided, and always, deeper down, there is the search for love and spiritual freedom.
