Using the explicit insturctions in this book, you can explore the worlds of espionage, international politics, foreign wars, ships at sea, cellular phone activity, emergency services and any other arena where the airwaves are used to communicate.
The book is dated in places, but it is a great overview for newcomers to, or those just curious about, the hobby. The author begins with the world of AM (mediumwave) monitoring as a way to introduce beginners to the hobby without the need to buy any equipment. I liked the approach, but it didn't sell me on monitoring AM. Following this are sections on shortwave and VHF/UHF which are great. Many people think of scanner enthusiasts as ambulance chasers or NASCAR hillbillies, but the hobby can be so much more.
The book only hints at the possibilities for monitoring digital signals--utility stations, packet radio, RTTY, FAX, SSTV, and other computer-based monitoring. If anyone knows of a similar book with a digital focus, let me know.
One of the most complete guides to shortwave listening hobby around. Arey is good writer and makes some pretty good observations about equipment and such. The sections I read were worthwhile and I've got over 40+ years in the hobby. YMMV.
