Well, it seemed very incomplete to me as if the editor ran out of time in the end! So for anyone who's read the first 4 books and wondered why certain plot points were left with loose ends, (particularly bringing Siggurdson to justice, from the 4th book) and are hoping they do not get overlooked, then I really hope that the Author will attend to them if he ever continues with this series!
Alright, alright, alright... Don't get me wrong here, I love Andrew Hammond's work. I love this series, I love Jud and Bex (they are actually so cute ahh). But this book seriously cheaped out, and it sucks because of how much cool stuff it tried to do.
So here's what this book should've done better:
1. Raheed and Grace... sorry what happened to these guys? Yeah, we know they're in the background somewhere, but like... We literally don't see anything for the last fifty pages. There was a brief scene with the dragon's towards the end, but that's literally it. I was starting to warm to Raheed and I missed Grace.
2. Luc. Okay so he shows up for one haunting, disappears, then... never comes back again. I would've wanted him to show up in the end and talk to Grace. I get he was there for plot advancement and for Jud and Bex to get closer but... it seemed so sudden. Frankly, it should've been a larger part of the story.
3. Dragons. Uhm. As cool as it sounds at first, and as cool as it looks on the cover page, dragons were not a huge part of this story. They just showed up, killed someone, then left.
4. ENDING... HELLO? Alright so the ending would've been alright HAD THERE BEEN AN EPILOGUE. There are so many unanswered questions, so many loose ends that you can assume but man, I would've liked a solid answer. Here's a list of stuff I would've wanted to explore: - Jason Goode released (and clear up his company name) - The dragons confirmed to have returned to statues - The castle's current state being reported (DCI Khan) - DC Craven being found out - Grace gets to talk to Luc (Honestly, I would be satisfied with just leaving her in the SPA room with him and continue somewhere else.) - Jud and Bex talking and reflecting on how this adventure is over and how they're always going to be there for each other, etc.
I feel the author fell really short of wrapping up those endings. It wouldn't have taken much... but... y'know, it would've been much more satisfying.
5. Overall, I feel like Hammond tried to cram too much into one story. You have Bonaparte, which honestly would've been enough of a story. But then you have the dragons and ghosts of the bankers, and there wasn't enough page-time for either story to fully develop. I think the dragons was a bit too much, and that just the ghosts of the dead bankers would've been better.
Despite all this book's flaws, I still love this series.
I love Jud and Bex so much and they have so many cute moments too. The scene at the beginning of the book, where Jud was still struggling with Luc, the scene on the ship, and how they were just always there for each other. It wasn't one of those pointless relationships, but one of love, trust, and understanding. I only wish we got to see them just talk about everything, maybe go on a date, etc.
Jud and Bex Quote that I Loved:
I did like how this book let us explore some characters' past. Bonaparte was rather interesting. I also liked the twist at the end with Jud's mother, and how Bex was there to comfort him. I only wish we got to explore it more... It was such a drastic plot twist, one that I know will impact Jud forever. So, will Jud's name ever be cleared?
I don't think this series turned out as popular as it should have. I really, really want the sixth book. Remember Siggurdson from book 4? Whatever happened to that guy? There is SO much potential in this series, as the third and fourth book (in particular) demonstrated. I'd definitely recommend giving this series a read to anyone. It's just so... neat.
Alas, it comes to an unsatisfying end. (PLEASE ANDREW HAMMOND WRITE ANOTHER BOOK).
