The Seasons of a Restless Heart: A Spiritual Companion for Living in Transition

In The Seasons of a Restless Heart popular retreat leader and author Debra K. Farrington retells the story of the Israelites and their time in the desert, before they reached the Promised Land. The struggle of the Israelites wandering in the desert serves to illuminate the everyday challenges of letting go of the past in order to move on to the future. While transitions often feel like an endurance contest that would be better if it would end sooner rather than later, Farrington invites us to rethink these unsettling periods and learn to embrace them.  She shows how times of transition can become periods of rest, play, creativity, and discernment. Transitions, Farrington claims, give us the opportunity to re-create and renew ourselves and become more fully what God calls us to be.

A guidebook for transition times, a fringe space in the uncertain "now", between what was and what will be, which varies in length. It is a book for the desert time in our lives after a job loss, divorce, death, disease, a move, etc... No answers, suggestions... yes allowing one choices about how to live your between time.

Helpful book for someone in transition of some kind. Helps to define and give meaning to the waiting period between the seasons of life. Not set up as a daily devotional, but works well when read in small sections and used as one. I had a number of "ah-ha" moments while reading this book. Written from a Christian perspective.

This is a good 'spiritual' companion to William Bridges' Transitions, and Farrington weaves in quotes and her own story to illustrate ways to manage times of transition.

This is my second time through the book and it comforts and elucidates so richly through yet another of life's transitions.
I'm thankful for D. Farrington!
