Bear Grylls is cool. I even got the same brand of Merrell shoes he used on his TV show, though they turned out to be disappointing. He also wrote some pretty good Young Adult fiction, where the protagonists go through tough survival situations, just like the author, conveniently imparting outdoor skills and knowledge to the reader along the way. I have to say though, they do take questionable risks at times, which in a 'real life' situation one would probably not undertake, for instance scaling cliff faces without proper equipment instead of taking the longer but more circuitous route. Of course, Grylls had to put in exciting bits for a sense of adventure in his books, just like on his show, no matter if they are probably not the most sensible things to do.
This last book in the series took place in the Himalayas, one of my personal favorite outdoor destinations, with its varied habitat and terrain owing to the changing elevation, from lowland jungle through temperate woodland to alpine and sheer rock and ice at the very top. Many lessons to be had on how to navigate safely and find the essential food, water and shelter while avoiding natural hazards, whether dangerous wildlife, rock falls or flash floods. If one can forgive the mostly nonsensical plot and just enjoy the ride, this book can be surprisingly entertaining.
