Returning home after a ten-week stint on the Chesapeake Bay, Contract Archaeologist Grace Jackson assumes life will be returning to normal. However, she doesn't make it through the front door of her home before that illusion is shattered. Mamaw is missing, Lottie is still on the run, and Grace and the gang will be called to the forests of Fayetteville, WV to assist with the recovery of a body buried in the park for more than two decades. Set against the backdrop of Bridge Day in the New River Gorge National River, normal will have to wait.
I am a middle-aged wife and mother of two living in Huntington, West Virginia. I enjoy romance novels and mysteries, and when I started to write Playing Dirty in 2013, my goal was to write a sexy, suspenseful romance novel. Two dead bodies and no sex later, the series evolved into more of a cozy mystery series than a bodice-ripping romance. Now that the first three novels of that series are complete, I'll be changing it up a little, working on some mostly-romance-with-a-little-mystery novels. That doesn't mean I won't be revisiting Grace and the crew, but I've left them in a good place in the meantime. I hope you enjoy their adventures, and maybe learn a little something about my first love, archaeology, along the way. Thank you so much!
Grace is still at it, digging in the dirt, finding mysteries to solve, and putting herself in danger in the process. I missed the character of Mamaw in this book, but look forward to reading about her in book three, as this book is leading up to something big, I think. This time around, Grace is delving into a twenty-six-year-old missing girl case. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out the endings but in this case, it took me almost to the end before doing so.
This is a very good story and this series is also very good. I like the characters, the setting, and the plots for all of them. There could be a bit more technical editing, in my opinion - a former English teacher always notices these things, wink, wink. But those few errors do not detract from the story line and the action as Grace and her archeological team try to figure out a murder in the hills of West Virginia.
If you like the Kathy Reich "Bones" series, you will love this series featuring Grace Jackson and her archeological team. Not as medical/technical as Bones, but exciting and fast paced.
