The book is published in association with an exhibition of Victorian paintings from Lord Beaverbrook collection, which toured several Canadian museums. The catalog of the exhibition shows 45 paintings, each with detailed provenance and information about the artist and the painting. Despite the date of publication, the plates are printed in good color. The selection of paintings shows that Lord Beaverbrook preferred landscape and genre paintings, mostly from Scottish artists, and the book is printed in a landscape format, which benefits these paintings. The book has several bilingual introductory essays, which altogether provide a good review of the Victorian art scene and a discussion of recent revived interest in Victorian art. Incidentally, it is one of the earlier full-color books focused on Victorian paintings.
