"Counting in the Forest 1-2-3" is a counting book with a temperate deciduous forest theme. Although children will enjoy the photographs of the varied animals and plants featured, this volume is flawed as a concept book.

The photographs are inconsistently captioned. Some animals are identified, but not all plants and animals are. It would be helpful to know what bird laid the eggs to be counted for the number five, or the breed of wolf selected for the number four. Counting pine cones is a challenge when one of the cones is nearly in the gutter and shown on end. One duck for "nine" blends in with the murky water so well that it is easy to think that the photograph is short one bird. Concrete thinkers being introduced to counting must have examples that are unambiguous. The photograph of six blueberries could be confusing, since the gaps between the bush's leaves are approximately the same size and shape as the berries, and the background is a very similar color to the berries.

The series is ostensibly about counting, but the titles in the "read more," section all focus on forest animals and biomes; this section should be expanded to include a counting book or two. With a word count of 22 and only 23 pages ten of which are photos), an index scarcely seems necessary. The suggested websites also fail to include a link to counting activities.
