How to Draw for Beginners – A Complete Step-by-Step Guide from Simple Shapes to Confident Creations by Nora Layne gets five stars from me because it delivers what it promises. It starts with practicing drawing consistent straight lines and circles, and, in small increments, one lesson builds on the last. By the end of the book, with patience and practice, you could be drawing not only still lifes, rooms and buildings with perspective, but also realistic people, including expressive faces, hands and bare feet, and all kinds of animals. The key, of course, being your own time, effort and perseverance. But if you love to draw, this one book could vastly improve your technique.
I liked the chapter format, with a preview at the beginning and review at the end, the fact that every page is a pencil drawing in itself, and the encouraging, conversational tone, e.g.: “If you can draw a potato, then you can draw any animal!” Chapters include a brief reflection in which the student notices their own preferences and progress. Also, starting in Chapter Six, there are QR codes for free video tutorials that reinforce the lessons.
