This book has stuck in my memory since I was a kid in the 80s in a rural Australian primary school. The illustrations are such a perfect fit for the story that I have images still plastered to the wallpaper of my mind. I suppose I associated with the themes of being out of place, socially isolated and relying on creative outlets for my enjoyment. Is it strange that now, roughly 30 years later and recently diagnosed with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder, I'm turning to picture books to explain my lifelong experience to friends? This is the sort of book that gives me hope that there's appreciation out there for what I have to offer. A beautiful book.
