There are pieces which come across as modern day blogs; there are those which come across as long journal entries written for a future audience in mind; and then there are those which are kind of long-winded rants. Many pieces seem like newspaper commentaries where Divan Singh Maftoon calls himself Editor Riyasat but then there is more personalized account where he supposedly forgets to switch the editorial hat. Overall, its an interesting read and like many memoirs, its significance is pretty much time bound. And although its not an ordinary memoir, its very hard to take it as a timeless literary classic in the company of Yadon Ki Barat. Yes, it has its extremely interesting moments but they get lost in lots and lots of chaotic ramblings.
The schematic disarray is understandable since the pieces were actually published in Weekly Riyasat in 1940s. There must be considerable rewriting as Divan Singh published the later edition with long revisions. In my view, this disarray takes too much away from an otherwise invaluable literary event of those years when it was actually published.
