Fletcher is a hunter who has always chosen devotion to his god over his own desires. When a hunt promises to pay enough coin to set his family up for life, he must embark on a dangerous journey to the distant island of Sparthos. By his side are his two companions—Rose, the fiery huntress he dares not love, and Onyx, the giant of a man with a strong arm and stronger spirit. From raging storms, to fearsome monsters, the trio faces deadly trials that test their skill, their wits, and their faith. As Fletcher grapples with the ghosts of his past and the pull of his heart, dark secrets unravel under the facade of the island kingdom. These secrets threaten the safety of not just the hunters, but all of Felheim.
This book was great. Not something I would read again, but still good. I will definitely be recommending this to other people and offering signed copies that I will later sell on EBay. The romance scenes were pretty awkward for me, considering my teacher wrote the book. The beginning was slow, but that might have just been me. The ending was INSANE. I don’t usually read fantasy books like this, but I might read more because of this book. Definitely adding Lord of the Rings to my everlasting TBR pile. 🤟🫡✨🥸 (This was my first review, but I had to do it. I was forced <3)
This is monster hunting fantasy at its finest! I loved the characters. I loved the world. I loved the fellowship and bond between the characters. The witty banter was fun as well! This fast paced fantasy story is exactly what I needed and I highly recommend it to anyone enjoys heroic fantasy!
As a lover of adventure-fantasy novels, this story swept me off my feet with its immersive world-building and pulse-pounding escapades. The story follows Fletcher, a devout hunter torn between his loyalty to his god and his personal desires, embarking on a perilous journey to the distant island of Sparthos. Accompanied by Rose, a flirtatious and witty huntress whose bold spirit is as captivating as her untouchable heart, and Onyx, a formidable yet deeply loyal giant of a man, the trio's dynamic is simply magnetic.
The adventure was nothing short of exhilarating. From battling fearsome monsters to surviving raging storms, each trial felt vivid and tense, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The detailed descriptions of the hunts, trials and Sparthos's treacherous landscapes, with its hidden dangers brought the story to life, making me feel as though I was right there with the characters, facing the same mortal perils.
The magic woven into the narrative was both mysterious and integral, adding layers of intrigue and wonder. Fletcher's internal struggle with his faith and haunting past added emotional depth, making his character arc profoundly resonant. The dark secrets lurking beneath Sparthos's luxurious facade unraveled masterfully, heightening the stakes not just for the trio but for the entire realm of Felheim.
The Isle of Lies is an epic tale of courage, loyalty, and the enduring power of belief. The storytelling is both gripping and heartfelt, making this book a truly magical read.
Looking for a fast-paced action packed journey with some of the most lovable but fierce fantasy characters you could think of? Here it is! The Isle of Lies is great fantasy, full of mythological creatures, quests, twists and turns and all of the things one would love from classic myths like Jason and the Argonauts and the Odyssey, the trial of Hercules and more! The MC has a goodness that was incredibly welcome, as often times we want a little more anti-hero than hero, but I loved how his character was always thinking of others, and used his formidable abilities to help those in need, yet did not hesitate to strike when essential. I also loved the friendship and the bonds between the MC and the other two AMAZING characters in the trio. It was playful and fun, full of amazing and humorous banter but also full of heart, some drama and depth. The story moves incredibly quickly...at times almost too quick as you want to linger in some of the locales with a few of the characters, but it is full of adrenaline, has a beautifully satisfying conclusion, while still leaving the world wide open for a lot more! It was well-written and a great fantasy read for anyone who loves the genre and for those that maybe want to dive into quest based fantasy reading. You will love this book! Go now!
If you’re looking for a fantasy novel with characters you can’t help but fall in love with, this is the book for you. It follows a group of hunters - Fletcher, Rose and Onyx - who are like the knights of this world and travel around helping people and killing mythical creatures. Fans of mythology and cryptozoology will get a kick out of all of the creatures introduced and the clever ways in which they are taken down. What is great about this book is that Treadaway does a fantastic job of putting obstacles in the way of his heroes to move the story forward, but it never feels contrived or Deux Ex Machina, it is extremely organic. Can’t wait for the next one!
This book is a fast-paced adventure that deals with the ideas of faith and choices, but put into a world that immediately brings D&D to mind. Had someone told me that this been published alongside the Drizzt books, I old have believed it! The core values of companionship and trustworthiness that many of the old Forgotten Realms books had were present within this and made it really enjoyable. I especially appreciated the main character, Fletcher, and the fact that he isn't a grim anti-hero like what is so prevalent right now in fantasy. He was so relatable as were the rest of the trio of Hunters, and overall I enjoyed this book.
This is a great fantasy that focuses on monster-slaying, guild dynamics, and classic fantasy trope of the hero's quest. The MCs Fletcher, Rose, and Onyx are all excellently fleshed out and have a fun dynamic that makes reading their banter enjoyable. The plot, stakes, and romance all feel organic. I especially appreciated the romance and how it stayed in the background of the main plot, yet provided a very serious conflict for Fletcher.
The narrative is 1st person, present tense, which is an interesting choice, and one that did take some getting used to. All in all, I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone looking for a little monster-slaying thrill ride.
When I tell you it was hard to put this book down to adult, it is not an exaggeration. The Isle of Lies was an action-packed fantasy about a trio of guild monster hunters that were sent on a faraway hunt to retrieve a relic for a king. Between crazy storms, injuries, and fighting deadly monsters, they sure went through it and could use a vacation. It’s full of twists and turns, so be ready for a wild ride. The world building was excellent and at the end of each chapter, it had me wanting to know what happens next. I will definitely check out more from this author in the future. Highly recommend!
This fantasy novel took me on an emotional rollercoaster with Fletcher, Rose, and Onyx. Their adventures were filled with danger and secrets that kept me on the edge of my seat. The book explored themes of faith, loyalty, and the dangers of hidden truths. The writing was so immersive that I felt like I was right there in Felheim. I was swept away by a mix of excitement and sadness, all wrapped up in a story of friendship and overcoming challenges. If you’re looking for a gripping and unforgettable read, this is the book for you!
Structured a little strangely, but pretty solidly written, especially for a debut, self-published novel! I found the magic system intuitive and easy to follow, which is really nice. But I definately could've done with more contemplation. The back of the book kinda claims that Fletcher has a crisis of faith, but really his faith is challenged, and he just eventually conceeds. He doesn't really think deeply about why he's doing anything other than "'cause it feels good."
Fun, fast-paced, action-packed adventure! The characters were instantly lovable, and this fantasy world is a place I want to spend more time in. Can’t wait for book 2!
