Despite having had this book on my shelf for decades, I don't think I have ever made a recipe from it. I've browsed through often enough; the photographs are attractive, and I remember that that was why I purchased it from a publisher's sale at my place of work in the first place.

Good Housekeeping Vegetarian Gourmet has a reasonable design, with numbered instructions for each recipe. For some reason the print for the recipes is smaller than the introduction for each section, which seems rather counterintuitive. The name of each recipe is printed on a grey banner, and occasionally there is a solid grey box with a "variation" on the recipe. Also, it is a large-format hardback book which will not lie flat and stay open in use. (That is a big disadvantage.) The recipes are varied; some are rather strange such as "Hungarian Cherry Soup", or "Cabbage and Hazelnut Croquettes", but in the main they are typically wide-ranging vegetarian fare - mainly towards the entertaining end of the spectrum, as you would expect given the book's title.

The chapters follow the lines of conventional cookery books: "Soups", "Starters", "Lunches, Suppers and Snacks", "Main Courses", "Accompanying Vegetables", "Salads and Dressings", "Breads", "Puddings, Cake and Biscuits", "Drinks", and "Basic Recipes". There is also an introduction, plus an index at the back.

"Good Housekeeping" is a very well-established, classy, glossy English magazine about all things domestic and gracious living. It apparently has a very good reputation in this area, (which is not mine) with articles on cookery for dinner parties, indoor furnishings, tasteful decorations, upmarket fashion etc. I still don't feel particularly inclined to use their cookery book though. Perhaps I'm not a gourmet. Or perhaps after all, looking again at the titles of the sections, it is just a bit ... boring.

Edit:

Yet after all, I find that I am tempted by some of the recipes. There is a section on soups which looks quite promising. Since I am keeping this book I shall revise my rating and am increasing it to 3 stars.

(Note to self - It's always as well to take neglected books down from the shelf and have a good look, once in a while!)
