As Sergeant Jim Bergerac on BBC TV, John Nettles has helped to make the island of Jersey familiar to over 14 million viewers. Here he offers a personal view of the island where he now lives, and reveals the hidden Jersey, away from the usual tourist beat. The book provides a guide to the twelve ancient parishes, beginning with the author's home village of St Brelade, and introduces many of the houses and gardens featured in the Bergerac series of over 60 episodes.
John Vivian Drummond Nettles, OBE, is a British actor and author. He is best known for his starring roles as detectives in the crime drama television series ''Bergerac'' (1981–1991) (as title character Jim Bergerac) and ''Midsomer Murders'' (1997–2011) (as Tom Barnaby). He has also narrated several television series.
Found this book a real pleasure to read. The mix of history, geography, locals legends, tv filming anecdotes and stories about Island characters was very well constructed. The books is divided into chapters devoted to each Island parish, and interspersed with numerous illustrations, etchings, photographs and reproductions of paintings. I read this while re-watching episodes of Bergerac on cable tv. The photos of cast members and Nettle's warm descriptions of funny incidents which happened while shooting the series added to my pleasure in revisiting this classic.
BERGERAC is an old British TV series that my husband and I have watched through DVDs. John Nettles is the star as he is also the star of MIDSUMMER MURDERS which we also have watched and are still watching. BERGERAC takes place on the island of Jersey near the British Isles. Jersey is a beautiful small island, and it always fascinated me while we were watching the DVDs. So I really enjoyed reading about this small island and especially John Nettles take on it.
I really enjoyed this book. It worked its way round the island systematically and struck a good balance between tourist info, history and Bergerac anecdotes.
