Fantastic book. I love his writing style and really enjoyed reading about his adventures in such a different world. While the title suggests a book about flying adventures, the book includes so much more. It was really interesting to hear about his experience as a pilot, but also about how his whit and attitude helped him to survive dangerous experiences both in the air and on the ground. I really enjoyed his stories about the people he interacted with, the lifestyle which is so different from anything else and his determination. Finishing this book made me want to disappear into an unknown world for a while to seek out my own adventures and experience his world first hand.
For me a very entertaining book. He takes a few flying lessons, gets a license then packs up his aircraft and ships it to South America where he picks up doing Bush flying on the fly. Out in the Wild West/outlaw land near the Venezuela border in Guyana in the 50's. He sets up diamond and gold dredging operations and brings his family out to the middle of nowhere. Lots of entertaining stories from an interesting place and time. The stories about his wife's shooting skills and how he used them to avoid trouble are priceless. A great read!
I heard the story of Haack on NPR and had to read his book. His stories are amazing, it's hard to imagine that so much happened to him and his family whilst in BG and they managed to survive. Definitely a page turner. Haack was an incredible person.
Hard to put this book down once you get into it. Amazing true adventures in South America - the author eventually came to Charlotte, NC and started a diamond company.
This was an interesting story about one of the first bush pilots and diamond miner in Africa. He had some compelling stories to tell, but the writing was not as good as I would have liked.
