A CHRISTIAN FATHER LOOKS AT THE ‘VERY WORST SCENARIO’ ABOUT Y2K

Author Steve Farrar wrote in the first chapter of this 1999 book, “It’s easy to look at this … problem… and blame the programmers who put it into place in the early days and never corrected it. They all figured that someone else would fix it. But no one ever did. And the reason that they didn’t was that the invisible hand of God kept them from fixing it… I figured out the other day that in the last two years I have spent almost a thousand hours researching Y2K. Why would I spend so much valuable time looking into something as bizarre as Y2K? The reason is quite simple: the more I looked and the more I researched, the more I saw the fingerprints of God… Only God could work a scenario where some of the most intelligent and gifted people in the world would get so caught up in the ambition and pursuit of more and more technology that they failed to notice a problem that a third grader could have pointed out.” (Pg. 2-3)

He recalls, “I wanted to write [this book] because I had a very deep sense that Y2K is going to be more severe than most people are probably aware of… I didn’t want to write this book because I realized I was deeply concerned about my reputation. I didn’t want people to say, ‘You heard about Steve Farrar, didn’t you? What a pity how he went over the edge like that,’ or some words to that effect. If I wrote a book on Y2K, then some would expect my next book to be about the night I got in a space-ship with some aliens…” (Pg. 6)

He observes, “Most of us don’t have the money to head for the hills. You have to buy some land, design and build a solar-powered home… put in a woodstove, chop two or three years’ worth of wood, buy a year’s supply of dehydrated food, plant a vegetable garden… It sounds great to head for the hills. Until you put a pencil to it… And even if you had the money, most of us don’t have enough time to get all that done between now and January 1, 2000.” (Pg. 78)

He suggests, “Matthew 24 says nothing about computers crashing. It says nothing about the power grid going down. It says nothing about how long the phones will be inoperable. So until the specific events of Matthew 24 take place, you want to be VERY SURE that God is leading you to head for the hills.” (Pg. 80)

He recommends, “Are you a single mom? If you’re concerned about safety, you might look into this. Ask one of the men you know to take you to a sporting goods store and get you started. You can enroll in a gun safety course and learn everything that you need to know. You may not have a husband in the house, but you can have a quiet and supportive friend named Winchester. Nearly every police car in the United States has a shotgun bolted down by the dashboard. A police officer with a shotgun can hold off a threatening mob until help arrives. A Spirit-filled, one-hundred-pound godly woman, holding a shotgun, can do the same thing.” (Pg. 87)

He summarizes, “Now remember our approach in this book. No one knows how bad this crisis will get or how long it will last. Some say it will be a few days; some say six months; others say several years. But we are taking the very worst scenario and staring it right in the face. Losing democracy in America is not a good picture. Will it happen? I don’t know. Could it happen?... I think it is in the realm of possibility. So let’s look at the worst…” (Pg. 200-201)

He continues, “with the coming Y2K crisis, Bill Clinton… could be the last president of the United States… I am simply saying that all of the pieces are in place for Bill Clinton to stay in the presidency permanently with very little effort… Bill Clinton at this point is a desperate man. The Starr Report has been out for just a week. The House Judiciary Committee is deciding whether or not to move ahead with impeachment proceedings. Even some Democrats are jumping ship and encouraging the president to resign. Desperate men do desperate things… all Clinton has to do is hold on until the first shock waves of Y2K hit. If he is able to hold on until then, he could sign the order that would give him virtually complete control of our nation due to the impending Y2K emergency. And if that scenario plays itself out, it will mean only one thing. The judgment of God is officially upon America.” (Pg. 201-202)

He concludes, “God may use the cold of Y2K to bring judgment. But he may also respond to the prayers of His people and nuke the cold judgment that dams and holds back the unfettered flow of His grace. If he decides to melt down judgment, revival will break out…. If He does, any hardship Y2K bring will be worth it…” (Pg. 230)

Of course, Y2K passed, and nothing much happened; certainly, President Clinton certainly signed no order giving him ‘complete control of the nation.’
