I discovered this book on the international Children's Digital Library website. It was written by a British writer, named Sherred Wilcox Adams. Five Little Friends is an adorable chapter book. It tells the story of Bob and Betty, Paul and Peggy, and little Dot. Their teacher, Miss West, blindfolds the children and has them pick a name out of a hat. If their name gets picked, they have to tell a story in front of the classroom. The five little friends share humorous, heartbreaking, and engaging stories about their family pets. Paul tells a dramatic tale about his big collie dog who saved him from drowning to death, and Betty talks about her pigeon who use to carry messages to soldiers in war. Later in the story, the children end up going on an adventure to help a blind man who lost his service dog and could no longer work. The children learn about the value of kindness and helping others. They also learn about the beautiful bond between animal and humans. I would recommend this as a beginning chapter book for grades 1st through 3rd. I love the element of story telling. Each character tells a different story in their own unique voice. There are beautiful lessons woven throughout the book, including the power of selflessness and the importance of family and friendship in the face of hardship.
