Haylee Awakened Seed

Rate this book
An ancient pattern begins anew…

Generations of oracles, seers, soothsayers and healers pass a relic of their lineage from hand-to-hand. They protect and prepare one another for the eventual blooming of a terrible secret…

An oath made long ago has been broken.

Haylee Garrett, a California teen growing up in the ‘70’s, is an expert at coping with things on her own.

Before her mother died, her dad had been a loving and affectionate father. Since then, he works all the time and barely speaks.

Haylee manages as best she can by doing chores, cooking their meals, and by staying out of her father’s sight.
Haylee thinks that her paranormal ability to communicate with animals is perfectly ordinary.

At fifteen, she is plagued with worry over her failure to physically mature. She wears sweats and avoids people who ask too many questions.

Haylee has no idea that she is about to take part in an age-old relay.

Excruciating pain starts at her temples and radiates out like pinpoint pricks of burning sparks throughout her entire body.

On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, a horrific development changes everything.

Raw fear courses through her. What’s wrong with me? her mind screams.

After the change.

Reveling in a sense of power and adventure, Haylee explores new adult boundaries within the confines of her life. She intuitively understands that this must be kept a secret—even from her father.

Suddenly, everyone in high school wants to know her. Haylee is thrilled when the boy she’s been fantasizing about finally notices her. A romance begins to grow.

Haylee remembers a few unusual things that her mother told her about the women in their family...what has happened is still a mystery.

When Haylee’s condition begins to cause an urgent drive to steal what should never be stolen, Haylee grows increasingly afraid of what she is capable of doing—and to whom.

This is a short but delightful read and I enjoyed it very much.

We're introduced to several characters but the story is based on Haylee. A young girl's coming-of-age story. Doris, Haylee's mother tells her young daughter that the women on her side of the family are special before her passing. For a child to lose her mother at 7, Haylee struggles but Gene, Haylee's father struggles more. He's so grief stricken that he completely shuts the world out including Haylee.

Haylee starts to experience changes within her body but doesn't know or understand what's happening to her. Excessive hunger, migraines, and an extreme blood loss lands her in the hospital. We then meet Glori Ridgeway, a nurse taking care of Haylee and quickly realize that she may possibly become someone of importance for Gene and possibly even Haylee.

The Author does a fabulous job describing Haylee's backstory and her ability to communicate with animals. The story does a lot of flashbacks and is some times a bit confusing but the overall flow is wonderful.

There are several twists, turns, and surprises (webs) in the story but those are of importance to the story itself.

My favorite character is Gene, I feel sorry for him. Next would be Haylee and hopefully Curtis. I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens between the two of them.

The ending was definitely a cliffhanger.

I would recommend this short story to everyone.

Haylee Need to Feed (2) by Lisa Redfern
Teens go through many changes and metamorphoses, but Haylee’s journey is a little different. Haylee is changing a little more than most girls who are becoming young women, because she’s also becoming…something else. Just what that something else is, Haylee’s not certain, but it scares her. And it should. Haylee’s experience of “otherness” has just taken on a whole new meaning. Now, she must find out what she is, and how to deal with the frightening new abilities, and needs, she’s discovered.

Haylee-Need To Feed is the second installment of Lisa Marie Redfern’s new series, which is aimed at YA readers who love to be drawn into mystery. So, if you love science fiction, fantasy, and YA novels, then you’ll want to check out this series.

I was drawn into Haylee's journey. A coming of age story with a twist. Redfern writes with a style that drew me into Haylee's world and experience.

Attention to detail allowed me to visualize every instance. Main characters emotion was delivered in a way that made me feel with her and for her.

Certainly going to be reading more by Lisa Redfern.

Audiobook Review: I never get tired of listening to Meghan Kelly and her narrations. I didn’t look into this story beforehand except for that there were a lot of positive reviews so I clicked and began to listen. This story is a YA tale that takes place in the late 70’s where Haylee, our young main character is going through quite a bit and once she turns eighteen she develops rather quickly and unsure of what’s happening. I’m intrigued with this story and curious to where things will lead to next. Book one leaves us with quite of a cliffhanger.

On the eve of Haylee’s 18th birthday, something inside of her changes. She is plagued with an insatiable hunger, a sudden blossoming of womanly beauty, profuse bleeding and a migraine so powerfully painful that it causes her to pass out. She awakens in the hospital with worried nurse and father looking on. After convincing them she is alright, the beginnings of another migraine spur her to steal some clothes and run for isolation, where hunger overcomes her once again and she eventually passes out. The next day, she is home again, convincing her father yet again that she is alright. She begins her new life as a ugly duckling turned swan 18-year old beauty at her high school with a hidden secret.

Haylee is special, but we don’t know what she is turning into, what her secret is. We know that she is changing, but we don’t know much about her before the event, except for several short memories of brief moments in her life that were significant. The author does a very good job of setting up Haylee’s backstory in these briefest of moments even while keeping most of Haylee’s secrets to reveal later on. I don’t know what Haylee’s favorite color or tv show is, but I want to.

Haylee’s ability from early childhood and her newfound secret from the awakening are not described in much detail. Haylee herself seems mostly unaware that her abilities are not normal, only that she is different from the other children because they treat her that way. Even during the change Haylee doesn’t find it at all disturbing, either her voracious hunger or her unusual newfound strength. She has almost no reaction to her predicament or from passing out or bleeding profusely. Does Haylee know something the reader does not?

This was a short quick read that flowed easily up through the abrupt ending that acts as a subtle cliffhanger. There are many questions to answer in Haylee’s continued awakening and adventure.

"Haylee - Book 1"
What made the experience of listening to Haylee Awakened Seed the most enjoyable?
Without a doubt the talent. Meghan Kelly is a phenomenal Voice Talent

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I loved the part when Haylee notices her webs. I usually do not read fantasy books, in fact I never read fantasy books. This one, however, was pretty impressive. I was very pleased with the storyline, the outcome (although, it isn't a stand alone book and cannot wait for the next in the series).

Which character – as performed by Meghan Kelly – was your favorite?
Haylee, without a doubt. Her innocence and then her fiestyness, was so fun to hear. Part of that is Kelly's talent though, she knows how to record a storyline and does it very well

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Haylee discovered her webs. It was like a coming of age before the coming of age

Any additional comments?
Haylee Book 1 basically is a pretty clean read for those that only want to read like that. I think I heard one curse word. The book is true fantasy though, so if you don't like fantasy, you normally wouldn't like this book.
The story is a bit graphic near the end, however without that, the story would be a moot point though.
This coming of age story is a great little book and has a lot packed into it's short status.
Again it is not stand alone though, the book leaves you hanging and leaves you wanting to know what is going to happen with Haylee.
I even cried a little bit when Haylee got so sick.
Dad, while emotionally reclusive, LOVED his daughter and you could tell.
I was really, really impressed with the VO talent!

Meghan Kelly did a wonderful job narrating the book. She maintain an even change between the characters that she was preforming throughout the book.

I found that this book is a great listen for the teenage girl. It was a coming of age and a coming of what changes Haylee Main character) found her body going thru. Even though her mother told her that she was special like the other women in her mom's side of the family. She never knew quite what expect except for the talent she had from a young age with animals. What you ask? Well not spoiling this part of the book.

With her father left to raise her unaware of her gifts and how to handle Haylee's coming of age. It made me smile to think of all those father's raising their daughters' on their own and how he handle her becoming a woman. How serious and funny her dad was at the same time it would in my words would have listeners blushing.

When her dad rushes her to the hospital unaware why his daughter looked like she was dying. While he was waiting for the doctors to take care of Haylee, the on duty nurse Gloria comforts her dad. A magical connection between them makes me feel that the nurse in this story may become a character in the next book.

The end does make you want more because of the abrupt ending. Had me a bit confused had me go back a chapter to listen again. Would go onto Book 2 just so I can see what will happen next. I feel that this book is great short listen from teen to senior. Being in my 50's I enjoyed it.

Note this was an audio review for the author thru Goodreads.

The First Book in a Great Ride

This is an excellent YA novel that beckons the question, What If? What if a young girl really can communicate with animals? What if that young girl harbours a secret she is only just learning herself? What if she grows up and begins to change – to become something more?

Lisa Redfern’s first novel in the Haylee series, Haylee Awakened Seed, is chock full of descriptive narrative and inspired illustrations that lead the reader into the life of a young girl whose experience of “otherness” is remarkable, but also relatable. After all, don’t we all feel a little different sometimes?

This is an excellent story for readers who enjoy fantasy, YA (young adult), and coming of age adventures.

I really liked this book, though it was way too short.Poor Haylee loses her mom and has to figure out life without her.Dad doesn't know what Haylee really is.Haylee, over a few days transforms from a underdeveloped child to a beautiful adult who is treated like a child, plus she has webbed fingers, but only when she wants to.The characters are well written. The narrator was excellent though sometimes the loudness coming thru the characters was jarring next to the regular storytelling.I would like to read more if there is a series.

It's more than just a trip back in to 1970's teen angst.....Haylee is evolving into something more than your average teenager! This is fantasy/time travel/and a little historical fiction(if you read all three!)
A quick read on your Kindle, with some pretty great art included (not often seen in books these days). There are also some free history books linked on the authors website.

A good start but an abrupt ending.

The vignettes of Haylee's early life don't seem to have any rhyme or reason as to their order, but they all did serve to illustrate the plot well. The problem was the ending. While I know this is a serial, I expected some kind of clues that we were nearing the end. The ending as it is wasn't even a cliffhanger, it was just the end of one vignette.

Lisa has a way with words. She captivates you as you fall into Haylee's life. You feel as if her pain and her sadness is your own.
I had never read a more vivid book of a girl transforming into the woman she was meant to be and on top of that, she has a unique ability. She has webs.
