What if love could defy time itself… but only if he gets it right?
A Pride & Prejudice Variation

Fitzwilliam Darcy has just made the greatest mistake of his life—insulting the woman he secretly adores. But when he wakes the next morning, it's as if it never happened. Trapped in a time loop and doomed to repeat the same critical day at Rosings Park, Darcy must confront not only his pride, but his deepest fears, regrets, and longings.

Each repeat forces him to grow, to reckon with the truth about Elizabeth Bennet, and about himself. But no matter how he changes, she never remembers. How many times must he fall in love with her before she can love him back?

Until He Gets It Right is a heartfelt, sharply written variation that blends the timeless charm of Jane Austen with a magical twist of fate. Perfect for fans of romantic time loops, emotional slow burns, and character-driven stories that linger long after the final page.

About the author

Rachel Hayes

2 books
Rachel Hayes, a lady of lively imagination and steadfast spirit, first became acquainted with the enchanting world of Pride and Prejudice at the tender age of twelve. Though the printed page first captured her fancy, it was the celebrated 1995 adaptation—starring the incomparable Mr. Colin Firth—that forever endeared her to Miss Austen’s art.

In 2023, amidst a season of profound personal sorrow, Rachel returned to the solace of storytelling. In the quiet watches of the night, while tending to the tender duties of single motherhood, she rediscovered her voice as a writer and began shaping tales of second chances, secret histories, and the quiet courage of the heart.

Her first completed novel, Until He Gets It Right, had long slumbered in draft form. Originally begun in 2021, it was at last brought to joyful completion with the kind encouragement of readers. In it, Mr. Darcy is caught in a mysterious loop, doomed to repeat his ill-fated proposal to Miss Elizabeth Bennet until he learns how to truly deserve her.

Her most recent work, Remembering the Future, imagines Elizabeth Bennet waking in 1811 with memories of a life already lived—a love lost, a child born, and a second chance she never asked for. It is a story of healing, transformation, and the enduring power of hope.

Miss Hayes delights in fashioning new adventures for Austen’s beloved characters, mingling the elegance of the Regency era with threads of time’s strange passage, quiet heroism, and the ache of what might have been.

Beyond her literary pursuits, she devotes herself to the education of her son, manages household affairs with diligence, and cherishes the hope of one day dedicating her labours wholly to the service of her readers. She extends a warm invitation to all who, like herself, find endless delight in imagining how one moment—one choice—might change everything.

A mixed bag

In this Groundhog Day P&P variation, Ms. Hayes has Darcy repeating the day of his doomed Hunsford proposal. For over a year! Eventually, Anne, Richard, Elizabeth, and Charlotte become aware of the repetitions. Each day, Darcy rescues 10-year-old Violet from falling out of a tree, and Violet becomes a seer of sorts, pivotal to the story's action.
It's a good story, but it goes on far too long. Indeed, we can relate to Darcy’s frustration with the endless looped Thursday because we feel it as well.
Then there are several places where the language is entirely modern, which brought me out of the story. And there are a couple instances of accidentally repeated sections.
If Ms. Hayes had found a good editor, or even a group of helpful beta readers, I believe this book could have been tightened and improved to five-star level.

groundhogs Day/time loop variation

What I liked:
*The original character Violet
*Anne deBourgh's character growth

There were a few problems with this book that I can't get past:
* Names. Jane Austen has part of the blame here because Darcy's first name is the same as his cousin's surname. The problem in this book is that Anne sometimes calls her cousins by their surnames and sometimes by their first name, so when she calls someone Fitzwilliam it's sometimes unclear if she is addressing Mr. Darcy or Colonel Fitzwilliam. There's also a few times when Anne addresses her mother as Lady Catherine. There's also a lot of calling Elizabeth "Elizabeth" instead of Miss Elizabeth or Miss Bennet.
* Excessive repetition. Given the time loop theme, a certain amount of repetition is necessary. However, there are conversations where the characters repeat their dialogue during one sitting.
* Mariah Lucas. We know she is there because Charlotte suggests she writes a letter to her mother, and she occasionally smiles at Elizabeth, but where is she for most of the plot?

I think this book has potential and would be improved by clearing up some of these issues, and also if it was shorter.

Wonderful!!

Without a doubt this is one of the best versions of Groundhog Day I have ever encountered. The twists, the turns, the absolute delightful humor, and all of the personal growth needed by darcy, elizabeth, the colonel, and Anne is explored in very fitting ways. Although, my favorite character in this book is without a doubt little Violet.

Enjoyable

This was a great book & I found the story engrossing; however, it needs editing. Names, including Collins and de Bourgh, are misspelled sporadically throughout & there are numerous instances of repeated lines & paragraphs. Mariah Lucas disappears from the narrative around 80% through. Its a shame really because the errors were frequent enough & severe enough to take away from what could have been an excellent book.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a Pride and Prejudice variation. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. Pride and Prejudice meets Ground Hog Day. This is a heartfelt, sharply written variation that blends the timeless charm of Jane Austen with a magical twist of fate. Perfect for fans of romantic time loops, emotional slow burns, and character-driven stories that linger long after the final page.

I really liked this book, but it was too long. I think with some good editing the author could have cut 1/3 of the book and still have a good story. It was an ambitious undertaking, with a number of characters that needed to undergo major changes in the course of only one day.

Darcy gets stuck in a time loop. He continues to relive the Thursday that he proposed and was rejected by Elizabeth at the parsonage at Rosings. It’s not definitive how long he continues to relive the day but given the ways he uses the time it seems to be a number of years. These he spends alone until slowly he is joined by his cousins Anne and Richard, who also become aware of the repeating day. The last important character to clue in is Elizabeth and she has the most difficult time recognizing her need to change.

The difficulty in this plot is that so much has to change over the course of a single day. Of course once the other main characters begin to remember the repeating days the changes happen at a faster rate. A wonderful character, a little girl named Violet, adds a lot to the story. She is something of an oracle and helps Darcy keep the faith.

Worth reading, but it will take some time to get all the way through. I ended up skipping several opening paragraphs of each chapter due to repetition.

(unfiltered, lack of a notebook review)
Some plot holes/errors: Violets blue eyes turn brown, and she goes from 11 to 10 years old. Her brothers treatment goes from an oil to herbs and from steam only to a tea+steam treatment. Things mentioned by Anne/Fitzwilliam that they were never told. Characters sit/stand/sit again randomly in scenes. In the last few chapters there are full repeats of certain paragraphs. Spelling errors; Anne to Ann, desperate Bourg to de Berg, etc. Misplaced words like quite instead of quiet. Needs another round of edits, which I hope it gets so I can buy a printed copy for my bookshelves.

The scene setting of Darcy waking up repeats often. At first I thought it was an error, then it quickly became intentional. Just as it began to feel annoying, the story picked up. I was starting to feel like it should've been ending, but then the plot evolves and becomes more open and indepth, so it didn't get dull.

While never graphic, there is a TRIGGER WARNING for suicide in the first third or so of the book and only in the one chapter.

I love the time repetition trope and this one was so nicely done, just needs another round of edits to be really perfect.

Excellent story but needs editing

There is so much that is good in this book I wanted to give it 5 stars. But there are a number of errors that change the meaning of sentences. They should have been edited! I hope the author somehow gets to read the error reports of readers, not merely the reviews. I put a lot of time into explaining the problems because the story was worth it! This book is quite an accomplishment, and the author should be proud. I highly recommend it to others.

Great variation!

I loved this one - and the end made a tear in the eye. I avoided the book for a while expecting not much more than a rehash of Groundhog Day - but I am glad I took the plunge to read as it is so much more. No spoilers - you will have to plunge in yourself…….

The most intricate repeated day I’ve encountered. I especially liked that Elizabeth eventually gets called out for her judgments, her pride in her mistaken abilities, and inconsiderate manners.

Too many inconsistencies, sometimes even in the same page. The other book by author also had this problem but here it's even worse. I'm beginning to think it is AI generated..

an entertaining new character

I enjoyed the story. I liked the way Anne’s character developed. I must admit that the repetitive dialogue got confusing at times.
