When Texas Attorney General Bob Sunday’s sister and three other passengers are robbed at gunpoint when they step off the stage at Van Horn Wells for a drink of water, the thieves kill one of the male passengers, pistol whip the other, then take the valuables from the female passengers. In doing so, they steal a locket from Bob’s sister—a family heirloom given to her by her recently deceased mother. Bob Sunday makes a personal request of Marshal Jubal Stone for him to go after the killers.
This is not the first stage coach robbery and killing at this watering hole. In fact, three others have taken place at this exact spot. Lobo has law, if you could call it that. An old constable with a game leg and bad shoulder has vowed he’s going to bring in the guilty. So far he’s been all hat and no cows.
Jubal Stone is on his way. Things are about to get real interesting in Lobo, Texas.
This was the best of the handful of solo Stones I've read. It's a quick read with a solid tale. Stone is asked to go to Lobo, a small town used as a watering hole for the railroad. They have had a series of stagecoach robberies, with the last resulting in several deaths. Looks like the local law is on the take as well, which makes it more important for Stone to see what is going on and to bring some Law to Lobo.
Recommended, it is a little light on action but has more than the others I've read in this series.
This was another excellent Jubal Stone western. As is true of this story like all the others in the series it was well written and full of action! It's the tale of a town taken over and run by a gang of outlaws and the crooked sheriff who takes his orders from them.I would definitely recommend it!
Kept me busy while I was waiting for the well to be fixed. Thanks. Casey Nash, lots of adventure in this short tale. Thanks for introducing me to a ghost town, that happens to be for sale.
This story was a little different but still a great read. Less violence and more “story”. Loved the episode about the hard candy under the saddle bags. Great trick.
