Shai'tan is a powerful dragon, enslaved by the dark witch, Khamsin. Although she raised him from a hatchling, and taught him the ways of wizards, she is a harsh and unforgiving taskmaster. When she sends him on a mission to acquire the Amaranthine Flask, a potion that will give her youth and beauty that will never fade, she discovers the difference between obedience and loyalty. 'The Amaranthine Flask' is a short story of approximately 3,500 words, and is set in the world of the 'Beyond the Veil' series of novels.
An avid reader of science fiction and fantasy novels all my life, I began writing The Guardian's Apprentice in 2002. After eight years of on-again, off-again writing, I finally published my first novel in August 2010. I live in rural Kentucky with my family and our six feline companions. When not acquiring recruits for my wife's ever growing cat army (which are terribly hard to train, by the way), I enjoy spinning stories out of the wisps of magic around me.
I'm already a fan of J. Michael Radcliffe's writing, having read his Beyond The Veil trilogy of books, and various other short stories he has written. This author is truly a master of the fantasy genre. In this short story, Shai'tan, the dragon, is sent on a mission by his mistress, Khamsin. He is ordered to retrieve The Amaranthine Flask, which contains an elixir for eternal youth. Will he be successful in his mission? You'll have to read this story to find out. As with all of this author's work, this book is full of larger than life characters. Dragons, wizards, and witches. It has a wonderful mythological feel. Highly recommended.
