Dad Has a Wheelchair

Rate this book
Julia and her dad have a day of fun. Her dad is like everyone’s dad except he uses a wheelchair. Join them as they play together at the playground, go fishing, visit the zoo and even camp and look up at the stars! Along the way Julia explains why a person might have a disability and what it’s like having a dad with a disability. But the most important thing you will learn is that people with disabilities, such as Julia’s dad, are just like you and me.
Creatively written by a proud dad with a disability and beautifully illustrated by Anita DuFalla, Dad Has a Wheelchair is a wonderful way to teach kids that a parent with a disability is no different than other moms and dads. Visit our website dadhasawheelchair.com to learn more.
"A lovely tribute to a man, and a family, that have been a part of my life and a wonderful way to open all of our hearts to those with physical challenges."

I read this children's book as part of some research I've been doing for a personal project. It's written by a dad who has a physical disability and is in a wheelchair, but from the daughter's perspective. It's a very educational and positive book which hopefully teaches children that a parent in a wheelchair is exactly the same as any other parent. I'm not a parent myself but I am in a wheelchair, so I think it's important to get the message across to children while they're still young, that even if someone has a few different abilities, we're all still the same really. And I think this book puts that message across perfectly.

Told from a kid perspective and has an educational aspect to it, since it is ASL themed, but in a sweet way from the daughter's eyes. It goes on to share all the things she does with her dad with rhymes that are cute. Definitely a family creation. I do like the disability aspect and not pushing it away but rather having the kid talk about it in her own way and how she loves the dad bond more than anything. This was just a sweet aspect of goodness.
