The Contract: : Book 2 of the Story of Nikki

Rate this book
Nikki Chalmers is facing a choice. She is a recent college graduate but hasn't had much luck finding meaningful employment.
She has a masochistic personality which she has indulged by, on weekends, submitting herself to Austin Trask, a smooth, extremely wealthy and handsome man who desires a woman whom he can completely dominate - to the point of keeping her confined.
When Nikki's place of employment burns down, Trask offers her a four month contract to be his slave full time for four months.
When this book opens, Nikki's four months are nearly up but Trask takes the opportunity to show her the type of brutality that she might face if she stays with him.
Nevertheless, Nikki is tempted. Even though she considers Trask to be "demonic," she considers his offer of a three year contract to completely under his domination.
She is terrified of possible injuries. But she finds the offer nearly irresistible. Can she negotiate terms that meet her needs while satisfying Trask's extreme demands?

This novel is the second book of a series. But it is a freestanding novel.
It is dark erotica, featuring BDSM themes and graphic descriptions. It is designed for readers over the age of 18.

Matter of negotiation: Cheeseburger, brainwashing and infernal restraints

This 2nd Kindle Edition has a censored cover picture. The text is unchanged and unabridged.

I liked the book and am looking forward to the sequels.
Like Book 1, it's a real page turner: I read it in one sitting.

In and of itself I would give it five stars. Compared to Book 1, however, only 4 stars.
Therefore I will give it four and a half stars.
I will give it four stars here and five stars on Amazon. Here I can explain this in more detail.
With Amazon I never know whether they will approve my review (two attempts were rejected).
The community guidelines for kink content are somewhat fickle.

So, why only four and a half stars?

Because the sequel is unfortunately much shorter: Only 180 pages (22 chapters), the first book has 271 pages.
And I didn't like the second chapter (torture scenario) at all.
The book begins with [what came before] Chapter 52 of Book 1 (nine pages).

The blurb is okay, but only describes the initial situation.
The action takes place over a period of approximately 14 months. Of this, six weeks relate to the end of the first contract period, which was limited to four months. This is followed by a six-month break (with one short interlude). Afterwards, Nikki and Austin sign a new contract, which is what the title of this sequel refers to. This determines even stricter treatment. Nikki's suffering continues. First in the familiar surroundings of the mansion and by the end of the book in a new prison.

Torture szenario
The author probably took a wrong turn here.
Security guy: ”The borrower wants you roughed up, and they plan to rough you up themselves. This isn’t just about sex. These guys are going to hurt you.”
If this were a thriller and Nikki was a master spy or dangerous terrorist, I might have gotten something out of this scenario.
Trask: ”He used to be a contractor for a certain government agency.“
But Nikki is a sex slave, there is no pleasure to gain, just brutal torture.
Nikki: “That guy almost killed me.“
Trask: ”Why? For entertainment, basically. And to show you who‘s the boss.“
Obviously I completely misjudged Austin Trask.
However: Nikki had adjusted her attitude. She had discovered that she could be punished at a level which did not arouse her, but instead hurt her.

Psychological evaluation with clinical psychologist
”She’s sane, awake and alert but disoriented in time…”
Was too superficial for me.

The Break
Trask: “I don’t want to see you in less than six months.”
I was expecting a shorter period of time, maybe like a semester break.
Nikki is released and given a draft for a new contract.
She enjoys the total abolition of the rules and lives with Ria.
I found her pizza experience disturbing.

Intermezzo
Three months later there is an unexpected interruption in the break.
Nikki is still unemployed and Austin makes her a tempting financial offer.
Sex slave for a week.
Loaned to a vanilla family: Mum, dad and son.
As a special gift for Dag (18), the honor student (prep school).
This fantasy scenario is well done.
Security guard: “You are back in slave mode.”
The family and Dag's friends are quite awkward when dealing with a real sex slave.
It's amusing that Nikki herself has to give them hints.
Nikki gives Dag a reasonably good explanation as to why she's letting all this happen to her.
Nikki: “Do you know about Venn diagrams?”
It's hard to imagine what connects Arne the middle class daddy with Austin the billionaire. I don't think he's that close of a friend
Nikki:“You seem to have a lot of pervert friends.”
In fact, Trask is probably only using this opportunity to control Nikki again and to find out what she thinks of his contract offer.

Contract negotiations
Trask had actually initially only expected a follow-up contract for one year, Nikki's ideas exceed his expectations. She is generally willing to agree to a new contract that includes 3 years of service. But the first draft contains conditions that are unacceptable to her.
Nikki: “I’m willing to start negotiations. Here are my demands.”
Among other things, she wrests a financial reward of one million dollars a year from him.
However, the treatment she expects as his slave is now stricter than before.
I believe that the extension clauses were just a pawn sacrifice to give Nikki a feeling of success.

The Mansion
Tightened routine interrupted by slices of normality.
The one day when Nikki could have a real meal, and read, and watch a movie made a huge difference to her morale.
Maintenance day: Predicament bondage and whippings

The Prison
Trask has Nikki transferred (in a box!) to a new prison.
Trask: “You alive in there, Nikki?”
… site of an industrial operation that was abandoned half a century ago …
Nikki: ”I love you.” Wow! WTF, that was unexpected.
Here she is guarded more closely than some dude in the Guantanamo prison camp.
“… locked up like a dangerous terrorist.”
Trask: “So, Nikki, are you ready to tour your new home?”
This was surprising since Trask otherwise literally leaves her in the dark.
Abandoned by her friends, she is now at the mercy of her tormentors and yet she seems happy.
… she would be naked for the next two and a half years …

A few notes about some characters:

Nikki
“Sir, you know that I love sex… and restraints.”
In Book 1 we were able to follow her inner monologues relatively seamlessly. Therefore, one could also begin to understand her resulting decisions. In this book she makes decisions that sometimes hit the reader like a bolt from heaven.
The male author has two problems to solve when describing a female masochist. He must combine and express the perspective of a woman with the desire of a masochist. However, with Nikki he does this unsatisfactorily. Most of the time she does what she does and you don't know why.
The author doesn't allow us to delve deeply enough into the mind of his heroine. I can't say whether it's on purpose or whether it's too difficult for him.
Objectively speaking, Nikki is just being treated badly. Okay, you can't hold a masochist to the same standards as you would the average person. But in the end there has to be something like a gain in pleasure for her too. What are her needs? How are these satisfied? What exactly
is it worth to her to accept everything?
How does she process Valery's disloyal behavior? ”Val, you are banging him?”
When did she decide to even get involved in contract negotiations with Trask?
Has the feeling of love towards Trask been dormant in her for some time or is it just a situational stress reaction?
Trask: “Nikki, we’ve been very hard on you today, and you’re at the edge of your emotional resilence.”

Austin Trask, owner
We still don't know enough about him. This may be intentional for suspense reasons.
His sadistic tendencies probably go much further than expected.
Pattie: “He has speculated that, eventually, sex slavery may be made legal.”
Is he really actively pursuing the legalization of sex slavery as a specific form of prostitution?
Reality check: So far prostitution in the USA is only legal in a few counties in Nevada. And given the current political situation, nothing will change that.
Does the story here move towards an alternate reality?
Trask: “You had to be seduced into slavery.”
Seduction has obviously worked for Nikki. Methods that worked for her may fail for slaves recruited in other ways.
Mister Moore: “He thought that the North Korean brainwashing treatment might work better.”
Trask wants to brainwash Nikki. But he is just an amateur who rarely gets enough advice from experts.
Psychologist: “It does endanger her mental health.”
But if he changes her personality, he may also destroy that part of her that willingly and passionately wants to surrender to him. Robotic behavior is not sexy.
Trask may overshoot his intended target.
His goal: “I want you to make my personal slave.”
Trask's dominance is not necessarily characterized by charisma, strength or good looks.
What’s your superpower again? I’m rich!

Mister Moore, trainer
“Nikki was looking forward to morning with Mister Moore, who was the closest thing she had to a friend in this oppressive place, altough his chief function was run Nikki to exhaustion.”

Mister DeAngelo, keeper
“I will also be responsible for your care and feeding when you are caged or tethered outdoors.”

Mister Tyson, new trainer
“… there was something scary about this huge black man.”

Valery
“Val had adapted well to the upper middle class …”
I think Austin corrupted Val. This looks like a sugar daddy arrangement.
“I’m dating Austin.”
What a violation of friendship etiquette (a.k.a. girl code)!
She breaks off contact with Nikki “… can’t stand seeing you destroy yourself.”

Ria
Chatterbox: "Ria did a lot of talking around her college."
She is transferring to a university and doesn't visit Nikki anymore.

Pattie
“I have signed up for Mister Trask’s Nevada training project. I have my MA in psychology and I am - was - working on a PhD in clinical psychology.”
With her psychological expertise and her experience as a slave girl, she could also work for Trask as a project manager. Assuming, of course, that she hasn't lost her marbles by then.

Kira
Trask: “Kira is a submissive, and an aquaintance of me would like to have a master - slave relationship with her. He send her to me to evaluate.”

Steve
Lab coat guy, responsible for the measuring devices in the discipline room
Nikki: “There’s a discipline room?”

A few things I particularly liked:

Nikki's quips
Cages
Mister K
The NIKKI brochure: ... the first in our line of pleasure slaves.
The Piercings … chain attached to her labia rings.
Slices of normality
Slavegirl in the box
Pet games, crawling with knee pads and hand mitts

Some things I was missing:

While I was working on this review, I read another book. An average formulaic story about a romantic Dom/sub relationship. That's when I realized what Nikki's story was clearly lacking: Sensuality.
The blurb describes this novel as a work of dark erotica. But the eroticism is reduced and is more fetishistic. Strict bondage and completely excessive security measures are described in great detail.
Sex, not so much. Some sexual acts cannot even be called explicit. Often they just list who fucked her and which orifice was used. That's not an exciting description, just statistics.
What I'm missing is a hint that the sex is actually incredibly good for Nikki.
The men who deal with her deliberately show no affection towards her and are usually even decidedly unfriendly. Sex looks impersonal, men are interchangeable.
Her masters and everyone she has to please see her as just a perk of the job, like a free cold drink in the break room fridge. They just take her. There are no lovers for her, only users. The men satisfy their desire with her, whether Nikki even enjoys seems irrelevant.

Trask: “Oh Nikki...all this men I turn you over to are acting on my behalf. They are my extensions.”
I have my doubts as to whether it works that way.

Why does Trask go to such lengths to complete the slave contract, with witnesses, bloody thumb print and a notary public. Such contracts are not legally binding. Just for symbolic effect?

Why wasn't there a farewell scene with Ria?

Nikki is intentionally withheld a lot of background information about her upbringing as a slave. Just asking about it is a punishable offense.
Therefore, the interested reader unfortunately does not learn much about it.

Some things which I didn't like as much:

“… this contract extension bullshit.”
Property tattoo
Why TWO ID discs? I like the piercing of O with one tag. Don't the chains get tangled?
“His army of underlings” Securitiy overkill
Medical measurements in the discipline room. This is all too clinical for me.
Controlled and prolonged pain at the limit of what she can endure. Seems scary.

Favourite quotes:

Ria: “But Mister Trask said that only certain types of people can flourish in these conditions… that you were one of those people and that I probably am not.”

Nikki: “For what possible reason would you hire somebody to beat the shit out of me?

Mister DeAngelo: “Mister Trask has decided to make you work at useful chores.”

Mister Tyson: “Now, they tell me that next on your card is an hour and a half running flat on the treadmill.”

Trask: “We’ve learned a great deal about psychological manipulation, the use of punishment, et cetera from you.”

Pattie: “Mister Trask decided to allow me to train for a year and write about my experience.”

Valery: “He treats me like royalty, and you get treated like shit.”

Nikki: “So you guys sign me out like a library book?“

Trask: “Your punishment will be painful and prolonged, with several stages over many days.“

Writing assignment: “I am nothing but a slave. A slave must perform what she is ordered to do.”

Nikki: “I wouldn’t put it past Mister Trask to hand me over to a family of psychos.”

Nikki: “If it’s a legal profession high school girls could go to hooker school.”

Nikki: “So, basically, I’ll be punished for everything.”

Here's my (upcoming) review on Amazon:

Quick summary: Loved it!

The story of Nikki continues in this, the second book in the extremely enjoyable series.

Nikki is a true submissive, and she knows what she wants. In this respect, the author has captured the essence of a submissive: they are perhaps the most in control of their actual lives, more so than most "vanillas" who go through life trying to conform to society's expectations and suppressing their own (potentially) deep, dark desires. Not so for Nikki, who knows she wants to submit fully, and does everything she can to enable that.

There is always a fine line between consent and non-consent when it comes to hard BDSM stories and the author manages to thread that delicate area masterfully. Nikki is given many opportunities to terminate her relationship, and always explicitly gives her consent, even when the consequences are quite severe.

As a reader and fan of such subject matters, this is a very satisfying journey. There's something quite compelling about being along for the ride as we see Nikki traveling further and further towards her ultimate degradation. Or is it her ultimate fulfillment?

The relationship between master and slave is deftly explored, the contract between the two helping to solidify their relationship and laying a satisfying erotic base for her (mis)treatment.

I highly recommend this series and this book in particular for fans of the genre.
