❤️❤️Essential and caring!

Delilah the ant lived in a simple house, her room was empty.

One day, the moving truck delivered her furniture and decorations.

But she was still missing something...

*****

A cute and caring children's book that helps put things into perspective and explains that we don't always need a lot of material objects to be happy.

A must-read!

Delilah the Ant has just moved with her family to a town called Newmark in Delilah and the Missing Curtains: A Child’s Guide to Gratitude and Happiness by David Farkas. Since their moving truck hasn’t arrived yet, they have to sleep with the bare minimum in their treehouse overnight. When the movers finally arrive, they bring in all the belongings, and the family begins settling into their new house. Delilah has plenty of things to fill her room, enough to make other ants envious of her, but she doesn’t seem to be happy enough with what she already has to decorate her room.

She would love to have new pink curtains to put on her bedroom window. That is, until her mom explains to her that she’s looking at things the wrong way. Instead of constantly wanting more new items, Delilah should make a list of all the things she has and is grateful for. Does Delilah learn the new lesson her mom tries to teach her?

This is one of those children’s stories that will delight readers of any age. The story is told in rhyming cadence, and readers will easily fall into the rhyming pattern as they read along. Delilah and the Missing Curtains is a delight to read out loud to fully enjoy the sing-song rhythm Mr. Farkas had created throughout the entire story.

This is the second story in the A Child’s Guide series, and it succeeds in accomplishing the goal of teaching children a life lesson without coming off preachy or pushy to young readers aged 4 to 12. It is enjoyable to read how Delilah is so caught up in the fact that she wants brand-new pink curtains for her bedroom, but she never puts any thought into what she already owns. When her mom taught her the lesson of writing down everything she already had to see how blessed she was, this immediately felt like the perfect teachable exercise that every parent/teacher/guardian could do with the children in their lives. Children will walk away seeing how gratitude is a better way of looking at life than constantly desiring more things that aren’t necessary.

The illustrations by Brittany Farkas are provided on almost every page of this delightful children’s story. Each picture is a full-page depiction of the written story that perfectly complements the action. They are done in muted colors, with some pictures being hand-drawn and colored in, while others appear more program-created. Readers will easily stop to take in the adorable illustrations that tell Delilah’s story. Ms. Farkas is not only an illustrator, but she is also David’s wife, a fellow musician, and mom to their three young children.

David Farkas is a longtime actor, musician, water polo coach, writer, dad, and husband to Brittany. They teamed together to create books that will not only entertain, but also teach young children. Their A Child’s Guide series aims to help children develop into honest, honorable, and mentally tough adults.

Delilah and the Missing Curtains: A Child’s Guide to Gratitude and Happiness by David Farkas is a story that will entertain readers of all ages while teaching a simple lesson to make them see how they should always be grateful for what they have in their lives. Well done, Mr. Farkas!

It’s not often that a children’s picture book manages to bottle a universally human truth and deliver it through rhyme, rhythm, and the relatable grump of a young ant. But Delilah does exactly that. This is a story about wanting more—even when you have enough—and learning that joy is not found in stuff, but in seeing clearly what you already have.

The Ant Who Wanted Curtains
The premise is disarmingly simple: Delilah the Ant gets a beautifully furnished room but becomes fixated on the one thing she doesn't have—pink curtains. That missing detail spirals into discontent, until her wise and loving mother delivers a bedtime speech that should probably be handed out with every credit card application.

It’s an elegant take on a modern problem. In a world designed to keep us wanting—where even toddlers are targeted by ads—it’s powerful to be reminded that happiness is not out there waiting to be bought. It’s something we practice.

Neuroscience, Gratitude, and Ants
Neuroscientific studies confirm what Delilah’s mum says: gratitude rewires the brain. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that people who intentionally practised gratitude showed more activity in the medial prefrontal cortex—a part of the brain associated with learning and decision-making—even weeks later. Practising appreciation doesn't just make us feel better in the moment; it builds emotional resilience over time.

This book doesn’t reference neuroscience, of course. It doesn’t need to. The message is clear enough for a four-year-old but rich enough to challenge an adult. That’s rare in a picture book.

A Book That Speaks to Parents Too
Parents reading this aloud may find themselves nodding with a little too much recognition. The “one more thing” mindset is a trap at any age. Whether it’s the elusive pink curtains, the better job, the bigger house, or the latest phone—what we already have quickly becomes invisible unless we stop and reflect.

Delilah gives families a gentle, accessible way to talk about this. It invites kids to name what they’re grateful for. It gives parents a moment to breathe and recalibrate. And it does all this without a shred of condescension or preachiness.

Illustration That Feels Like Home
Brittany Farkas’s illustrations are soft, expressive, and full of small charms. The rooms, while simple, feel lived-in and warm. There’s a visual rhythm that matches the lyrical text, making this a pleasure to read aloud (again and again—parents, be warned).

5 out of 5 Stars – Here’s Why
Because Delilah is not just a picture book. It’s a tool for emotional literacy, a gentle meditation on gratitude, and a heartfelt reminder that contentment is a skill—not a possession. It manages to be age-appropriate, psychologically sound, and genuinely moving—all in under 40 rhyming couplets.

For families, educators, and caregivers looking for something timeless and real, this belongs on the bookshelf.

For the most part, I liked reading this book and I think that it did an effective job of teaching little ones that gratitude is worth so much more than one might think. However, I subtracted a star from my rating because I thought that the story went in a few circles, and could have had one or two more added elements to the plot or been shortened.

I do think that it is important to get the point across and make it clear, especially with kids' books. That being said, I also think that the author's message was understood within the first half of the book. The second half of the book felt like it looped around again. It would be interesting to have the last part of the book show Delilah expressing her gratitude in her community, or spreading it around her community, just so that the story maintains its freshness.

Aside from that, there were still things that I enjoyed about this book! The main thing that I want to applaud is the illustrations. The illustrator did a fantastic job of giving each and every visual a fun and childlike feel, which I thought made for a more personal and meaningful reading experience for kids.

Lastly, I thought that it was a very smart choice to have Delilah's Mom make suggestions about how one can exercise gratitude. Encouraging Delilah to make a list of all the things she is grateful for is easy and accessible to all readers, which allows this book to be a useful tool for teaching.
