In this world of death and decay, Sak has found his single ray of hope, his Caller Lima. As they venture through the corpse-ridden island of Ralta, Lima wants to make things explicitly clear—any acts they do together are for Lima’s pleasure only. However, as they spend the night in an abandoned cabin, the two share a bath, and soon…a kiss. But they can’t dwell on their complicated feelings for too long in this wasteland. When Hana, the first core user, brings them back to the academy, the lines between right and wrong, trust and manipulation all start to blur…
Honestly, the entire plot is kinda weird, but I enjoy Sak and Lima. Every other character gives me major villain vibes. If they weren’t at The Academy and they were just roaming the world, I’d probably love it much more.
I have a ton of questions, but some of them are very slowly starting to get answered.
My concern at the end of the first volume initially made me grimace through the start of this one, since it played out about like you'd expect, with Lima using Sak roughly, and Sak being in quite a bit of pain during and after.
But then...everything pretty abruptly turns on its head. Lima basically does a whole 180 and becomes a way more thoughtful, caring person who pays a whole lot of attention to what Sak says (or doesn't say) and explicitly tells him he'll never touch him again if he doesn't want him to. Then he figures out some ways to make it not hurt, so Sak can actually enjoy it.
Beyond that, Lima seems to have entirely given up on pretending he doesn't care about Sak. He finds him strange and still a little aggravating, but he's kind and protective and starts putting Sak's life ahead of his own.
All this might've seemed out of character from their initial interactions, where Lima was a gigantic jerk to him, but through a series of flashbacks, we find out that it was all just defensive measures from living on the run for so many years. His age is unclear, both in the present and in the flashbacks to his time as a child soldier, but he's probably somewhere in his early 20s now. As an orphan with few options, he'd gone into battle in what ultimately turned out to be a completely meaningless death pit.
At least meaningless for all the kids who died there - because it turned out all they were doing was fighting in an endless cycle where they died, then were resurrected (if their bodies weren't too badly damaged) as the zombie soldiers they'd been battling the whole time. It's all some big experiment that hasn't been explained yet, but since Hana knew how to find them there, it must be somehow connected to the virus and the Academy.
And of course Sak does turn out to be the big weapon the Academy had been waiting for. The "cure," supposedly, but what they really intend to use him for is to wipe out anyone who's been infected. And Sak...well, he accepts it, because he's been brainwashed (by Ginger, as expected) and manipulated into thinking it's what's best...for Lima, mostly, since Sak doesn't particularly care about anyone else.
That's the really interesting part of this volume...the realization that Lima is actually the heart and the conscience of the two, while Sak is a little bit on the amoral side. The whole entry test with the two brothers turned out to be a test, like I'd thought, but it wasn't actually meant to isolate Sak...he was doing that on his own. When the Academy discovered him, they realized pretty quickly that he didn't care that much about his siblings or his parents, and had no friends. He was alone, and fine being alone, and had no big Hero Complex that could lead him to sacrifice himself for humanity.
So they tried a few things to see if they could generate some empathy or guilt that could be used to twist him into being their big sacrificial weapon. Nothing worked until, luckily, they were able to use his Caller against him.
It's a very interesting story that's difficult to see having a happy ending, but I like Lima a whole lot now, and Sak is such a fascinatingly complex character. I hate Ginger, though. He's the worst.
The plot thickened pretty fast. Bleak. Well so bleak.
Is it just me or does Sak come off as kinda on the neurodivergent spectrum? I thought so already in the first volume but it felt amplified here… . Oh well I guess apart from the overall suspenseful plot and the amazing art… I just can’t buy that Lima is already so caught up in Sak. They have known each other for such a short time. Well. I guess it matters that they’re core-user/caller but still. I don’t really was onboard fully with that development. I know a tumultuous & life-faring situation can make people feel whatever but still I just don’t feel it(!?). .- And well Ginger can go & f himself. Gosh. Men in glasses always are the evil ones. - Anyway. I can’t wait for the next volume being out in English. I’ll have to wait until January though. I want to know what will happen next.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I binged the series. Volume by volume it wouldn’t have been as good since the suspense and mystery would have been taken away when time makes you forget them.
Storyline 10/10 Characters 9/10 Artwork 10/10
As a series it was dark, but well written. You feel for the history and future of the two main characters while feeling disappointed in how the world around them has shaped and twisted their personalities.
The only reason I gave the characters 9/10 is simply because I feel many people won’t understand their perspective. Many people put their own values and morals onto characters not looking at how they might actually be the way they are due to the storyline.
The artwork, although mostly black and white, is gorgeous.
what was that ending. ARE YOU SERIOUS. This is messing with my head the plot twists are crazy if they don’t have a happy ending I will literally shoot myself
